Submission + - Adult Swim guys animate Pacman (superdeluxe.com)

Will writes: "This is a short I saw at SXSW this year. Some Adult Swim guys made a really well done cartoon about Pacman. The best part was afterwards when all the filmmakers spoke about their shorts, and while everyone described the immense costs endured and all the years they spent, these guys said it took them "two weeks and eleven dollars to feed the sound guy". Pretty funny. http://www.superdeluxe.com/sd/contentDetail.do?id= D81F2344BF5AC7BB27B66E8533EED677521D955A021BC5BC"

Submission + - Five-Foot Tall Penguins of Peru

i_like_spam writes: In an article geared for publication in this week's Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, scientists report on the discovery of the 40 million-year-old remains of a giant Peruvian penguin known as Icadyptes salasi. Standing at a height of about five feet (or about 1.5 meters), this is the third largest penguin known to have ever existed. In addition to its great stature, the finding is also surprising because giant penguins were thought to have lived only in colder climates. Quoting from an AP news story on the discovery, '... they reached equatorial regions much earlier than anyone previously thought.'

Security

Submission + - Orkut Vulnerable to Authentication Issues (xssed.com) 1

tomcataxis writes: Susam Pal and Vipul Agarwal have published a security advisory on full-disclosure about two session management vulnerabilties that affect Orkut. The two issues described in the advisory are:
  • A user's session remains alive at the server side even after he has logged out of Orkut. An attacker can take advantage of this to hijack a user's session.
  • While performing some important activities, like deleting a community, the application might ask the user to re-authenticate himself with his password before proceeding. If the user enters the wrong password, the user is logged out but the session cookies as well as the session are alive at the client side as well as the server side. This can be exploited by an attacker to hijack a user's session and misuse his account.
The authors of the advisory have suggested solutions to these issues in the published security advisory. They have also warned the users not to run any untrusted JavaScript code, program, etc. and log out of Orkut by clicking the "Logout" link only.

Submission + - R U there? Feds want presence systems (networkworld.com)

coondoggie writes: "When it comes to next-gen communications systems, what federal network managers want most is the ability to identify and notify employees in real time. That's one of the more interesting findings of a telephone survey of 200 federal telecommunications officials conducted by Market Connections for Cisco. The survey was conducted in April, but the findings were released today. Survey respondents ranked "real-time notification and identification of employees" first in terms of importance to an agency's ability to deliver on its mission. The other choices were: remote access, wireless networking, mobility, video conferencing, audio conferencing and instant messaging. Overall, 62% of respondents said presence was very important or somewhat important to agency mission. Presence is an application that makes it possible to locate and identify a device or user when connected to a network. http://www.networkworld.com/news/2007/062507-feds- presence-survey.html"
Music

Submission + - Apple now third biggest music retailer (mcox.com)

An anonymous reader writes: The most recent report from the NPD Group shows that Apple has surpassed Amazon.com to become the third largest music seller, behind only Wal-Mart and Best Buy. Apple is the sole digital-only seller on the list with 10% of all music sales. Also interesting is that this follows on the tail of EMI beginning to sell DRM-free music downloads. Sales of Coldplay's A Rush of Blood to the Head are up 115%, while sales of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon are up a whooping 272% since EMI dropped the DRM.

Submission + - Valkyrie: Germany Stifles Free Speech

WED Fan writes: "Love him, or hate his "religion"/religion, Tom Cruise is about to make a movie about an important part of WWII history, and the Germans are stopping him.

Defence Ministry spokesman Harald Kammerbauer said the film makers "will not be allowed to film at German military sites if Count Stauffenberg is played by Tom Cruise, who has publicly professed to being a member of the Scientology cult".

As much as Scientology is controversial, this is much like saying, "Spielberg can't make a movie as long as he a jew."

Submission + - AMA Considers a New Addiction: Video Games (technologyreview.com)

An anonymous reader writes: The American Medical Association is voting this week on whether video game additction should be added to their list of psychiatric illnesses. What's particularly irksome, is that the people involved in the debate don't seem terribly knowledgeable about the games themselves. As Erica Naone notes in MIT's Technology Review, if anyone who games for more than two hours at a time is considered an addict, then anyone who wants to get ahead in an MMORPG has psychiatric issues. Moreover, the AMA states that online relationships aren't real — which only further emphasizes there lack of udnerstanding about massively multiplayer games.
