Comment Re:Are they being friended to REAL accounts? (Score 1) 174

yeah, I know, so? I J-walk too. Still easier. Get an account with +3000 friends and it moves as slow as molasses in January in Toronto, its MUCH easier to manage 2 accounts than to deal with friend lists and all the stuff that comes with haveing that many friends. FB still has not gotten it to where the lists are easy to manage.

I have no delusions trollboi. The fact is I don't want my wall cluttered with crap. I only care about the people I care about. My scrutiny has F*** all to do with privacy, its a matter of clutter. When I first started playing games on FB and just accepting all requests it became difficult to keep up with friends and family so I separated it out.

My private identity? Oh, yo mean what schools I went to and the state I live in? Oh boy, run to the hills! Take off the tinfoil beanie, its on too tight and restricting blood flow to your brain.

I personally have 2 accounts. I use one strictly for games where I will accept any and all takers. I post to lists to increase my numbers and can see from 20 to hundreds of requests per day. That account has no real data.

My other REAL account only has REAL friends and Family. I scrutinize every request and all personal settings are very tight as to only allow friends to see the data. I'd consider myself an 'older' user @ +40. From what I have seen, this is not uncommon.

I love the AUTO jump to piracy every time this subject is broached. Frankly it's a load of crap. I don't have a modded Xbox but I do see that they have uses BEYOND pirating or cheating so why cant their be a happy medium that shows goodwill on the part of MS (or Sony or Nintendo or whomever?)

MS sees that there is a fan need/want for modding the hardware (Since I own it, I should be able to change it, blah, blah) why cant they figure out a way to detected modded CONTENT rather than modded HARDWARE and just not allow a modded game to be played while still allowing the hardware to connect to the network?

Surely this cant be that difficult, can it? It seems they took the easy way out and took some collateral damage with them. Just because you CAN, doesn't mean you SHOULD.

The problem with all of the above is you are talking about a PS user that has had 'training' via classes, etc. I was under the impression we were talking about a user that had never seen either Linux (or PS for the sake of this discussion) and had to accomplish a task and they were going to use installed documentation. That was the gist of this thread, or so I perceived, apologies if my perception is misguided. Given that scenario and your discussion of Photoshop's manual and notwithstanding the enormous changes in the application since say PS 7 to todays CS versions (which you seem to discount above) the situation is the same. The manual for PS assumes some knowledge of the app based on terminology, etc. Yes, there is a glossary but Linux man pages also point to 'See Also' man pages. Not all that different of a scenario.

If you are in unfamiliar territory and need to know how to do something specific, the PS manual is just as lacking as the Linux man pages and rightfully so, no author can account for all the scenarios a user might run into and some basic needs MIGHT be adressed, I have found the same to be true of many (not all) man pages as well.

What does burn mean? What is the purpose of the Clone tool? How do I use the magic wand or masking or layers? If you think the PS manual is going to help the green user with the above without them having to google a bit I would say you are projecting your own knowledge of the app to a user that knows nothing.

Except the user didn't get that knowledge in Windows by osmosis OR documentation, they had to learn somehow. You think a green user could work there way through photoshop with just the help file and never having to google? Linux isnt mainstream because it doesn't have a multi-billion dollar company marketing for it, that is the ONLY reason.

Most current routers have uPnP and its enabled by default, at least the ones Ive used, no need to open a port if using a current torrent client, it does all the work for you and closes the port when its done.

Anyone that has Free Download Manager has a torrent client and probably doesn't even know it.

The client lets you limit the upload speed so your point about upload bandwidth is moot.

What about home alarms? I am not going to pay ADT/Brinks/CompanyNameHere $35 a month when I can get a local alarm monitoring company to perform the same service for the same price per quarter ($12.99 per month). They don't offer VOIP or cellular connectivity. There monitoring centers are just as widespread as ADT's so the argument about using a local company in the event of widescale issues are irrelevant. Plus, my company requires me to carry a cell so they pay for it and Im not going to carry another personal phone, thats just silly.
