Submission + - How to recover/track stolen wi-fi iPod

sparkydevil writes: Hi, In September my 7-year old daughter's iPod touch was stolen from her school bag while at school here in Sarasota, Florida. At that time nothing came up on Track My iPhone. 30 minutes ago I got an email saying the iPod had been located to a Day's Inn hotel in Talahasee. I called the police who said I should contact the hotel to find out the room but the hotel said they couldn't do it as their wi-fi is open. Are there any other options to track it?

Comment NOT PEER REVIEWED (Score 0) 967

Isn't the correct procedure to wait until something is peer reviewed before comment - remember Cold Fusion? According to Anthony Watts, a well-known climate skeptic, there are several errors in the paper mainly to do with comparison of different data timelines and siting of temperature record stations.

Most climate skeptics agree that the world is undergoing "climate change" the larger question is whether humans should do anything about it.

Google Caffeine Drops MapReduce, Adds "Colossus" 65

An anonymous reader writes "With its new Caffeine search indexing system, Google has moved away from its MapReduce distributed number crunching platform in favor of a setup that mirrors database programming. The index is stored in Google's BigTable distributed database, and Caffeine allows for incremental changes to the database itself. The system also uses an update to the Google File System codenamed 'Colossus.'"

Snails On Methamphetamine 93

sciencehabit writes "Science answers the question: What happens when you put a snail on speed? From the article: 'The results suggest that meth improves memory, something that has been previously observed in creatures with large, complex brains like rats and humans. But since the snails store their memories in a simple, three-neuron network, the team hopes that studying the meth effect in these gastropods will help pinpoint how the drug's memory magnification powers work.'"

Cancer survival rates in the UK are shocking.

This article says that the the UK rsurvival rates are the worst in Europe. Here's the money quote: "Cancer experts blamed late diagnosis and long waiting lists"

I personally know of one person who died at age 50 because their cancer was misdignosed - all that extra screening in the US may be expensive but it saves lives.

And just to keep on topic, the iPad rocks!

I am sure that you want the the places you are evaluating to put some effort into their presentation, the same way they put effort into their food or their decor.

Our customers want to see a place that is cool, exciting and fun - they want the wow factor. You simply cannot do the same level of animated menus, nice rollovers or other animation effects in HTML that you can do in Flash.

Almost all of our customers have commented on our site's design - first impressions do count.

How ironic that Apple would be the one to deny others the power to create custom web interfaces for their businesses.

It's extremely annoying to see Mr Jobs deny me access to customers based on his idea of perfection.

As a small restaurant/club owner, I spent a lot of time creating a Flash-based website so that it would be more appealing to customers than an HTML site. Is Mr Jobs really suggesting that I should now create an app for my business instead?

Submission + - Climategate spreads to Wikipedia (nationalpost.com) 14

sparkydevil writes: Some catnip to those who have long argued about administrator bias and groupthink in Wikipedia.

Canada's National Post reports here and here that one of the objectives of those promoting Climate alarm was to control Wikipedia. Starting in February 2003 U.K. scientist and Green Party activist William Connolley, one of nine Realclimate.org team members, rewrote Wikipedia'½Â½Â(TM)s articles on global warming, on the greenhouse effect, on the instrumental temperature record, on the urban heat island, on climate models, on global cooling as well as working to erase the Little Ice Age, the Medieval Warm Period and infamous hockey stick graph. He rewrote articles on the politics of global warming and on the scientists who were skeptical of the team.

According to the article Connolly created or rewrote 5,428 unique Wikipedia articles, removed more than 500 articles as an administrator and barred over 2000 Wikipedia contributors while rewarding those who supported his views. "In these ways, Connolley turned Wikipedia into the missionary wing of the global warming movement."

Submission + - Obama speech to kids pro-Apple, anti-MS?

sparkydevil writes: The Prez's speech to kids was just released. In it he says "I've talked about your parents' responsibility for making sure you stay on track, and get your homework done, and don't spend every waking hour in front of the TV or with that Xbox." and a few sentences later, "Maybe you could be an innovator or an inventor — maybe even good enough to come up with the next iPhone".
