Comment Is this DREAD? (Score 2, Interesting) 603

A while back, there was talk of a technology called DREAD, which pretty much was a high-speed rotating disc that electronically released balls from it. By timing the spinning and the release, the balls could be fired in practically any direction as quickly as the machine could load the ammo.

It looks like you could combine DREAD with a high-speed tracking radar and you get something like this technology.

I was lucky enough to work in Building 2 for a couple of years and am happy to have been in Murray Hill at all. It was as magical a place as everyone says. Just being around so many great thinkers made me feel smarter too. I'll certainly miss it. (I wonder if the pjw's xface made of magnets still appears at the top of Stair 8)

I have experience running aroung a hundred Beuwulf
machines with around two moniter/keyboard sets.
One simply boots one with the moniter, sets it
running and then moves the moniter/kb to the next
one. This is designed mostly for long times
between reboots, and it can get tedious with a
couple hundred machines, but it works. And you
don't need a switch.

It's a naive, domestic operating system without any breeding, but I think you'll be amused by its presumption.
