Comment I, for one, welcome our costumed overlords. (Score -1) 837

Seriously, are you frying burgers there? Uniforms just barely make sense in retail and none in an office setting. In the early 90's I sold computer parts over the phone. The office manager thought it would be a good idea for everyone to wear nice shirts and ties to impress the customers over the phone. I wore a loud Hawaiian shirt and the shortest, widest tie I could find. The policy lasted 3 days.

Odysseus's Return From the Trojan War Dated 160

srothroc writes "Scientists have used astronomical data from the Odyssey to attempt to pinpoint the time of Odysseus's return from his eponymous journey after the Trojan War. From the article: 'The scientists then searched for potential dates that satisfied all these astronomical references close to the fall of Troy, which has over the centuries been estimated to have occurred between roughly 1250 to 1115 B.C. From these 135 years, they found just one date that satisfied all the references — April 16, 1178 B.C., the same date as the proposed eclipse.""

Do you really not think that it will be a criminal offense to tamper with the airline safety system? And, clearly, people with good intentions would never do such a thing, so they'll presume you had bad intentions from the start.
It already is. You know that part about the smoke detectors in the lav and breaking them so you can smoke? "Tampering with airline safety equipment is a federal offense punishable by..."

Journal Journal: Learning how to ride a bicycle

Pen and I went to the park behind the unit on Saturday to continue my learning of bike-riding. Using the new bike Pen got me for my birthday made things easier. I was going up and down a section of the bike-trail that went slightly downhill. I whizzed down the trail while applying the wrong brake and nearly falling. I got Pen to ride back up but the balance was getting better.

Submission + - New Fuel Cell 2x as Efficient as Genererators (ecogeek.org)

Hank Green writes: "A new kind of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell has been developed that can consume any kind of fuel (from hydrogen to bio-diesel) that is over two times more efficient than traditional generators. Acumentrics is attempting to market the technology both to off-grid applications (like National Parks) and also for home use as personal Combined Heat and Power plants that are extremely efficient (up to two times less carbon-intensive than grid power.)"

Submission + - Project Blackbox the World domination tour.

D10MR writes: "It looks like Sun's Project Blackbox is alive and well and on tour across the US. I was able to get a guided tour of the container. Sun's rolling it around the country on the back of a flatbed trailer equiped with generator and chiller unit. There's only 2 1/2 racks worth of real running Sun gear in it, but it's pretty cool to see/hear/feel this thing running while it's riding piggyback on an we've-got-ourselves-a-convoy-18-wheeler, good-buddy. (Scary visions of Burt, Dom, Sally). They even stuck a couple of blade chassis and storage arrays in it.

Ok, so they had the usual marketing and sales droids, but they also had one of their project architects on hand to honestly answer real questions, everything from how do you move the container around, to how the Sunspots work...very cool. It looks like Sun eats their own sausage by using their hardware(sunspots) to realtime monitor their hardware(shake, vibration, temperature and gps position) Lots of stainless steel in the thing, too.

NOTE: If you take the tour, you get a neat Project Blackbox long-sleeve shirt molded into the shape of the truck/container OR you can get a toy trailer/container matching the tour unit. It was pretty cool and totally worth the time to listen and walk through the container. ciao — D10"

Total Lunar Eclipse This Weekend 133

SeaDour writes "This Saturday night, March 3rd, a total lunar eclipse will be visible from nearly all inhabited parts of the world. A great shadow will stretch across the surface of the moon, eventually casting it in an eerie red glow as sunlight filters through our atmosphere onto the lunar surface. Viewers in Europe and Africa will have the best vantage point, able to watch the entire eclipse in action, while observers in most of the western hemisphere can see it eclipsed as it rises just after sunset."

Windows Vista Keygen a Hoax 154

An anonymous reader writes "The author of the Windows Vista keygen that was reported yesterday has admitted that the program does not actually work. Here is the initial announcement of the original release of the keygen, and here is the followup post in which the same author acknowledges that the program is fake. Apparently, the keygen program does legitimately attack Windows Vista keys via brute force, but the chances of success are too low for this to be a practical method. Quote from the author: 'Everyone who said they got a key is probably lying or mistaken!'"
