This is another ignorant question, but how do you filter them out manually? I thought by setting them to "brief best only" in the Sections option was doing just that?

Or did you simply mean filtering them manually in my head? If you mean that then well..that sucks :(.

Deep down I know you're right and it won't be fixed, but here's hoping. I've read /. for over 10 years and it's upsetting that the site just gets more "broken" or rather, doesn't allow users to even manually edit it to their liking. The same thing is happening to pretty much every Gizomodo site too :(.

Anyway thanks for the reply.

Comment I realize this is off-topic... (Score 3, Interesting) 75

I realize this is off-topic, but I have e-mailed the admins and gotten no response so I figured a fellow slashdot member might be able to help me.

Ever since the new design went live, slashdot seems to ignore my preferences. For example, I have "book reviews" filtered so I do not see the entire article (since I am not interested) and yet they still pop up on the front page with full text. It's a minor annoyance, but I was wondering if this is just a problem in the new design or something I'm doing wrong.

Similarly, the exclusions by keyword does not seem to be working beyond a single word (in my case "idle"). If I put multiple keywords (like "bookreview") it makes my entire front page empty. I have tried with spaces, commands, semi-colons, etc.

Again, I realize this is grossly off-topic, but I am hoping a fellow user could help me make my slashdot experience better (or back to how I enjoyed it).

Thanks!

Is there a reason the "classic" index option is no longer available? I guess I hate change, but I've been using the classic index for 10+ years since it was a lot cleaner and simpler. Can you please allow those of us who prefer the old/classic index to turn that option back on? Technically you already have the options available so please allow us users to turn them back on (or off).

Also hitting submit for some of the Options doesn't do anything. I keep trying to fix my timezone and it doesn't change.

Comment Idle? (Score 2, Informative) 309

What a surprise, samzenpus posting an idle article on the main page under a heading such as Science or Your Rights Online so his articles get more views.

Seriously, take a look at the articles you've posted today samzenpus and the sections you placed them in. All, but one of your stories are Idle and yet all of them appear on the main page.

Thanks for bypassing my filters and cluttering up people's pages with your nonsense.

I must be missing something, but I too have turned the Idle section off (or so I thought) where only a small title is shown, not the full article, but this crap still gets through it. What did you enable to filter this out accordingly? Perhaps I am unable to see the options you mention since I am using "Classic" Mode?

In any case, I am getting quite sick of idle stories continuously showing up on my front page. The quality of this site has been trending down in the last year and this is no small reason (i.e. idle stories being tagged as news).

Because Samzempus purposely puts idle material under "Science" or "Technology" so that it gets views. He knows most of us block idle, so the only way to get views on his stupid shit is by bypassing our filters.

I wonder if there's a way to contact the /. admins and ask for him to be fired. He does it every single day and the quality of the site has gone down considerably due to it. I'd be fine if he properly labeled idle things idle, but he doesn't. Based on comments it seems there are quite a few of us who wish he'd be fired. Maybe if we all mailed the admins, it could happen?

Probably wishful thinking :/.

Is anyone else getting sick of samzempus purposely marking an idle article as 'science' or 'technology' that is clearly idle just so it gets more views? We already know you mis-tag articles purposely so they get more views (most people filter out idle), but seriously do your job correctly.

Most of us come on this site for relevant technology and science news and do our part by filtering out articles we are not interested in. I for one do not appreciate when this particular moderator purposely bypasses my filter on a near daily basis just to get more views or 'prestige' within the site. If anything you're becoming more infamous as being the moderator that posts useless things. /rant

The part where this is classified under 'science' and thus goes above my personal filter. I already filter out idle stories, but this obviously still came through since it's under 'science.'

It's a way to inflate the number of reads on a story they contribute since they already know many people filter out idle stories. It's getting ridiculous lately.

Programmable Quantum Computer Created 132

An anonymous reader writes "A team at NIST (the National Institute of Standards and Technology) used berylium ions, lasers and electrodes to develop a quantum system that performed 160 randomly chosen routines. Other quantum systems to date have only been able to perform single, prescribed tasks. Other researchers say the system could be scaled up. 'The researchers ran each program 900 times. On average, the quantum computer operated accurately 79 percent of the time, the team reported in their paper.'"
