Euler's Partition Function Theory Finished 117

universegeek writes "Mathematician Ken Ono, from Emory, has solved a 250-year-old problem: how to exactly and explicitly generate partition numbers. Ono and colleagues were able to finally do this by realizing that the pattern of partition numbers is fractal (PDF). This pattern allowed them to find a finite, algebraic formula, which is like striking oil in mathematics."

universegeek writes: It appears Fermilab's Tevatron will be shutting down by the end of 2011. Rumors confirmed today at the ISP220 conference say that the DOE denied further funding for the project. Looks like the LHC is our only hope in the hunt for the Higgs after all.

Torino writes: So SGU has finally been cancelled with the remaing 10 seasons to air in Spring. Apparantly the cast learned of the cancellation via twitter which is not th ebest way to to save the show. SGU has had its number of problems even spawning a community of people who dislike the show. Can this show be saved via fan support, considering it never had more than 500,00 viewers? Did the show have potential and would it have radically improved?
