Submission + - Without marijuana there would have been no Apple

Shadi Almosri writes: "Apple CEO Steve Jobs gives his view on drugs and the current worldly perceptions on them. Quite controversial but possibly an eye opener? Steve Jobs always leaves me pleasantly entertained by being such an extremely high ranked member of the IT community, yet so incredibly politically incorrect, i find it rather refreshing from the usual Silicon Valley PR we are constantly deluged with. "In my own life, drugs have played a huge role not only in helping me relax and unwind and have a good time, but also in being able to open up my creativity and see things in a new way. Without marijuana, I can almost guarantee you, there would have been no Apple Computer. Certainly there would have been no Macintosh.""

Submission + - Good note-taking software

An anonymous reader writes: I've noticed that I do a lot of brainstorming on paper, and I wondered why I don't use my computer more. I realized that one of the things I like about writing on paper is the ability to arbitrarily position my text. Is there good software for OS X that lets me put the cursor anywhere I want and begin typing immediately? As for PCs, I think OneNote allows this — is there anything else? What about software that also lets me drag and drop entire blocks of text any way I want to organize them?

Submission + - Microsoft/Novel agreement released

annodomini writes: "The SEC has posted the terms (with a few bits omitted for confidentiality) of therecent agreements between Microsoft and Novell, which have sparked so much debate in the Linux community and even led to changes in the GPLv3 drafting process. The three parts of the agreement are the Patent Cooperation Agreement, the Technical Collaboration Agreement, and the Business Collaboration Agreement. There are all sorts of interesting tidbits in here, like exceptions to a patent release for things like Wine, and all but calling OpenOffice a "clone" of Microsoft Office."

Submission + - Joomla Tutorial: How to edit a Joomla template.

promo1397 writes: "Joomla templates are essentially a series of files (php, html, xml, and image files) that are stored in the 'templates' directory of your website. You can modify these files via FTP (File Transfer Protocol), use a component called JoomlaXplorer, or you can use the editing interface that is available in the template manager. In the administration interface, go to: Site > Template Manager > Site Templates. Select the template you wish to modify and select either Edit HTML or Edit CSS. * Edit CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) — This file controls many elements of the look and feel of your site, such as colors and fonts * Edit HTML (Hyper-Text Markup Language) — This is the file that controls where module positions are defined and positioned. With a few exceptions, what is in the CSS file and what is in the HTML file largely depends on the approach of the template's designer. One common change is to use your own title logo. Graphics are linked in the HTML file. Just change the reference to the image of your choice. Keep in mind that it if it is a different size than the original image this may change the appearance of the site in unexpected ways. Another way of editing files would be to just copy and paste the code into an HTML editor. There you will be able to experiment with the code and change things to your liking. Submission + - Novell goes public with Microsoft Linux deal

InfoWorldMike writes: "On the back of defending the agreement this week, Novell did as promised and published details of its landmark November 2006 Linux partnership agreements with Microsoft. Linux advocates are expected to scour the documents for signs of how the agreement may affect Linux and whether anything in it will put Microsoft or Novell in potential violation of the upcoming version 3 of the GNU General Public license (GPL). The GPL is used in licensing many components of the Linux operating system. Open-source advocate Bruce Perens said he would be looking to see exactly what Novell was given through the deal and whether there is any requirement for the Linux vendor to defend Microsoft's patent claims. "What I'm actually looking for is, to what extent was there a violation of faith?" he said."
