Submission + - Raspberry Pi beta boards unveiled 1

anwe79 writes: Those of you who have been wishing for a Raspberry Pi this christmas will sadly not get your wish granted. However, you may be happy to hear that populated beta boards have now been produced. Beta of course means the boards still have some more testing to undergo. But, if all goes well, those inclined should be able to get their hands on production boards in January!

Head over to http://www.raspberrypi.org/ for some juicy pics and more details.

Submission + - Whistleblower releases eBook about mass poisoning (sparkwatch.ca)

An anonymous reader writes: Whistleblower releases eBook about mass poisoning in the Alberta oilsands:

"During construction of the UE-1 project in northern Alberta, Syncrude exposed thousands of their craft workers to high levels of toxins when a boiler was shut down for repair, and harmful gases (that would normally have been burned) were pumped out of a nearby smokestack in raw form. The "Plume of Doom" lasted a week, with hundreds seeking medical attention at Syncrude's First Aid facilities. However, because of the massive oil profits to be lost from project delays, Syncrude actually forced the unionized construction workers to stay and work in the toxic cloud for several days, under possible threat of ten thousand dollar fines."

Submission + - ASK SLASHDOT: How to build a personal cloud? 1

MotorMachineMercenar writes: Recent announcements from Google, Apple, MS, etc. about cloud services have left me cold: most of them would require me to pay fees, get attached at the hip to a service provider, or don't offer everything I want so I'd have to sign up for several services. Perhaps most importantly, I would be at the mercy of fickle service providers who might go offline without warning. So I've thought about building my own personal cloud for my music, movies, TV series and photos.

I could provide the server with my desktop PC, could use one of my internet domains to host FTP or whatever else is needed for the cloud. I would like to push and pull all the content to/from my devices, mainly desktop and laptop PCs and Android phone. It would be ideal if I could share the content with friends as well. Open source would be a huge plus.

Is there anything like this available already, or is there anything in alpha or beta?

Submission + - Stamping out low cost nanodevices (vanderbilt.edu)

RogerRoast writes: Vanderbilt University scientists report that they have developed a simple technique for stamping patterns invisible to the human eye on to special class of nanomaterials. According to the article, the method works with materials that are riddled with tiny voids that give them unique optical, electrical, chemical and mechanical properties. “It’s amazing how easy it is. We made our first imprint using a regular tabletop vise,” Sharon M. Weiss the lead author said. The article was published in the latest issue of the journal Nano Letters
