Comment Still Crazy (Score 2) 327

After All These Years. Still impossible to move the status bars to the side (vertically). And that was the feature that made me drop Gnome after beeing a happy user for years. I even used to ridicule KDE users. But now I'm on KDE too. And don't tell me my gripes can be fixed with extensions - no extension will give me vertical status- and tool bars. It's sad watching someone you love sink m'ore and more into the quagmire every time they move. But they won't listen and be rescued. It's like a Greek Tragedy in six acts.

Which is why when it was my turn to upgrade got a top of the line w530. Yes it is super fast. But the Thinkpad substance is on a decline.

First of all the new chicklet keyboard design make me hit the wrong keys all the time. Especially the delete key! And this after two months of trying to get used to it. The old keyboard I could use without looking. But now they have removed all the physical clues. No more gaps between F-key-groups so I have no idea if I hit F5 or F4.

Then they have removed the status lights for such things as caps lock and battery vs charging.

And the screen is 1 cm lower than my old T61 - which was 1 or 2 cm lower than my older 4:3 laptop. Each new machine give me fever lines of code to work with. I am not a happy customer any more. My productivity has taken a hit and my boss won't like that.

But what can a girl do? Make my own?

They remove important functionality. So I end up with a product beeing worse than it used to be. That is not progress.

Making Gnome look better is OK - but function is much more important! I use my laptop for work and not gossiping online!

Why force the user to use an inch of the height of the already too low 16:9 screens for toolbars? On Gnome2 I had a vertical bar on the right. Me beeing able to see more lines of my documents must surely be more important than having a toolbar with a clock on all the time?

Why do I have to Ctrl+Click to open a new terminal when another is open? I do not know anyone who has just one terminal open?

When copying files the filetransfer window does not appear in the window list so I cannot quick peek to check how much is left.

Why no menu? Having all apps in one big list is messy! Menus make it easy to find an app you do not remember the name of but you know it is in accessories somewhere.

Nautilus have trouble opening my home catalog. No matter what strange or buggy files you have an important tool like Nautilus should not hang! These are just a few off the top of my head. I have many more...

This! I always had my bar on the right. But at the same time my new laptop came with an even lower screen Gnome removed that functionality! Why remove features? I use my laptop for work and not for play or gossiping. This sillyness is costing me money!

Submission + - Commercial Quantum Cryptography hacked using light (nature.com)

stkris writes: By using off-the-shelf components scientists have managed to remote control two commercially available QKD systems and tracelessly acquired the full secret key. I remember reading about the unhackable quantum cryptography a few years ago. I guess it's not quite there yet.
