Comment Re:What about Flash games and other stuff? (Score 2, Interesting) 328

people are leaving Photoshop in droves to pick up superior OSS tools like GIMP, they will leave Flash too.

I know you are trolling but this just makes me laugh. Many people rather pirate Photoshop than use GIMP. The reasons for this are plentiful. Like not being able to organize layers into folders. This is a very minute detail but it's so annoying when having lots of layers.
One of the big points is that there's no native support for cmyk in GIMP that just makes it plain useless for print-productions.

I agree that it's usable for day to day stuff like quick touch-ups and resizing but doing anything seriously is just a pain in the butt. So much so, that I rather fire up a virtual machine with windows on it when I am using linux than use GIMP for a prolonged time.
That's not to say that GIMP doesn't have it's application because it's extensibility and some of it's scripts are very nice but it sure as hell isn't a finished useable Photo and Picture editing program for media designers and other professionals.

You are right the catholic church WAS much worse than Scientology ever will be. Teaching creationism is very wrong because it brings religion into the public-school system which is run by the government which means that the separation of religion and government is not exercised. But guess what if they'd still torture and kill people for heresy or something like that we would fight them.

As for the stigma that comes with the belief, you're right again. It's wrong that most people think that Scientologists are loonies because that's just a belief like any other. But unless the Church of Scientology stops it's radical behavior against anybody opposing it this probably won't go away.

you don't get it. It's not about abolishing the scientologic belief. It's about the Organisation "Church of Scientology".
Get rid of the guys that are making it hard for it's members to leave and charge them an arm and a leg for "courses" and we're happy. The trial that decided that the "Church of Scientology" is not a religion specifically stated that individuals have the right to practice their belief.

Submission + - Let's get your fat kids off the couch this winter! (thegardengames.com)

M. v. Lemon writes: Over the past 25 years the obesity rate among children in North Americ has tripled. The reason: poor diets, lack of excercise and the ever increasing and improving videogame/computer technology. It is far easier to stay at home now and play the Nintento WII with a bowl of potato chips than to go out and try some games yourself. The solution: get involved in your kids excercise routine. If kids see you going out for a walk or hike in the park, they will want to come too. With the winter olympics coming up, this is a perfect time to teach kids about the fabulous winter sports that can be offered. There is such a variety for everyone that the whole family can definitely enjoy it. Remember just because your kid doesnt like basketball or is not so good wit a stick and puck doesnt mean that they don't like excercise. They may just find that they are good at one of the less conventinoal sports like skiing or snowboarding which you certainly won't find in the school curriculum. So this winter lets get our kids off the couch, teach them about the variety of sports at the olympics and spend some quality time together as a family. To raise awareness of this shocking statistic and to promote the spirit of the winter games, I Marvin van Lemon will be making my way through major cities in North America in my lemon costume. Kids and parents can follow me online as I make my way to Vancouver 2010 on my website www.thegardengames.com Remember; keep active, keep fit and have fun!

Immortality may be practical for an individual but is very unpractical for society.
While I see death as a tragedy, I see it as a necessary tragedy.
For one thing immunity from aging leave enough time for bacteria and viruses to evolve into something deadly to you. So you probably are gonna die sometime anyways.

But what I think is far more important is that our development as an evolving being depends on us dying.
I don't mean just biological development but also technological and especially cultural development.

If a large amount of people with the same mindset would stay alive for centuries they might block out new and possibly better Ideas.
It would be like the middle ages all over again but this time possibly for ever.

While I certainly don't wish to die, I still see the necessity for it and I accept it.

Submission + - SPAM: Can We End Aging by 2029? 3

destinyland writes: "For the past 9 years, many of the world's leading researchers have been quietly collaborating on a scientific roadmap to reverse — yes, completely reverse — the human aging process," explains David A. Kekich. He's the founder of new biotech project that hopes to end the 100,000 lives lost to aging every day, and within 20 years. Many of the project's researchers believe we're approaching "longevity escape velocity" — where medical advances outpace aging itself, "potentially making death-by-aging a choice rather than a date with destiny." Two University of California researchers shared their findings at a kick-off event in November, where the group's colloboration was disclosed to the public.
