Cheques aren't just used in retail. Many small businesses - builders, central heating engineers, and others of that ilk - accept, and prefer, payment by cheque or by cash. They don't want the extra expense of accepting credit cards, and not all customers have access to electronic funds transfer.

Some acceptable alternative, that doesn't involve having a computer of a rather insecure mobile phone, will need to be devised before phasing out cheques completely.

I think it matters very much that the OP thinks:

"I'd like to tell the CEO before I take the job that we have to stop referring to all these people as 'IT people' or I'm not going to be able to attract and retain the top-tier talent that is required."

It strikes me that he is not the right person for this management job if he can't retain top-tier talent because of a job title. The good people don't care what their job-title is, just what the work involves. And good managers have better things to care about than job-titles.

Well, both the rotary control on the radio and the push buttons on the wheel do the same on my system. The volume increases and decreases in fixed increments. The resulting volume level (if I can't tell be ear when it's right!) and station tuned to are displayed on the information panel in the dashboard, which is almost in line of sight whilst driving. So to check the volume level is no more of a distraction than checking the speed. Mind, I only drive a cheap FIAT. Perhaps more expensive cars don't have such a good system.

I rarely swear at volume controls. I swear at the kids instead.

My car has simple controls on the steering wheel to control the tuning and volume of the radio/CD player. I would have thought it possible to similarly mount simple A/C contols. Trying to retune the radio, or even just adjust the volume, can be an uneccessary distraction if you have to look away from the road at the controls.
