Submission + - Assange Denied Residency in Sweden (newsdaily.com)

Flea of Pain writes: Sweden denied a work and residency permit Monday for Julian Assange, founder of the WikiLeaks website that angered the United States by releasing classified U.S. military documents about the Afghan war.Assange has been establishing a base in Sweden in order to benefit from the Nordic country's strict journalist protection laws. He is also being investigated over rape allegations in Sweden, which he has denied, calling them baseless.

"The board today rejected Assange's application for a work and residency permit," said Hakan Gestrin, a spokesman at the Swedish Migration Board. He gave no reason for the rejection of the permit, citing confidentiality rules.

Assange, an Australian citizen, can appeal the decision within three weeks.

The Pentagon said Sunday it had a 120-member team ready to review an expected leak this month by the whistle-blowing Wikileaks of as many as 500,000 Iraq war documents. Wikileaks released some 70,000 U.S. military files on Afghanistan in July.

Submission + - iPhone users have more sex (cnet.com) 1

Flea of Pain writes: Yes, in a deep and sonorous study by the dating site OkCupid, there seems to be no doubt: iPhone owners have more sex than BlackBerry owners and a lot more sex than the worthy, solemn, dedicated purchasers of Android phones.

The numbers for women might leave some readers breathless--as they rush to their local Apple store to buy an iPhone.

For this analysis of 30-year-olds with smartphones suggested that women with iPhones had an average of 12.3 sexual partners (I am sure the 0.3 knows exactly who he is), while their age-equivalents who had opted to put an Android into their purse scored a mere 6.1.

Submission + - Hobbit on Hold (torontosun.com)

Flea of Pain writes: Director Guillermo Del Toro has confirmed upcoming Lord of the Rings prequel The Hobbit has been put on hold indefinitely because the movie has been caught in a "tangled negotiation" over the future of the MGM movie studio.

The film, based on J.R.R. Tolkien's first book in the fantasy series, was reportedly due to begin shooting this summer, but has been mired in delays.

Lord Of The Rings director Peter Jackson, who will act as producer on the new film, recently dismissed rumours of trouble with the picture, insisting: "It's not really been delayed, because we've never announced the date".

Submission + - Fable III Announced for 2010

Flea of Pain writes: So Fable III is finally in the works! Peter Molyneux revealed that his team was working on Fable III, which would arrive in late 2010, two years after the release of Fable II. The game will give you the primary task of becoming Albion's king and leading the people to happiness and the kingdom to glory. Fable III will be something bold and different, Molyneux promises, stating that story and drama will play a major part in it. New things will be done with the dog and the bread crumb trails mechanics, which were present in the second game, and you will be offered complete control of your actions and your people's actions, as you will be the king of Albion. Molyneux also says that your family in the game will play a major role but more details in this regard are not available at this time. Also, you will need to balance many things, including poverty and greed, tyranny and compassion or progress and tradition, all in order to keep your subjects happy. Furthermore, you will be able to set taxes and decide how you will rule your subjects. Your spouse, be it a king or a queen, will also point you into various directions over the course of the game. It seems that you will start as a son or daughter of the hero from Fable II and then progress until the halfway point of the game when you will be named king or queen of Albion. This means that you need to keep your save data from Fable II in order for a higher degree of customization.
