You're right. NASA should totally fund an expedition to disprove the existence of the magical pink unicorn that many people have theorized lives on the dark side of the moon.

You're absolutely right. If NASA happens to be going around the dark side of the moon with a satellite and then fails to detect said magical pink unicorn beyond a reasonable doubt, then continuing to believe it is ridiculous. Remember that it wasn't so long ago that everyone "knew" the world was flat and you were a whackjob if you believed any differently.

Improved Image Quality For HMDs Like Oculus Rift 55

An anonymous reader writes "The combination of smartphone panels with relatively cheap and light-weight lenses enabled affordable wide-angle Head Mounted Displays like the Oculus Rift. However, these optics introduce distortions when viewing the image through the HMD. So far these have been compensated for in software by using post-processing pixel shaders that warp the image. However, by doing so a loss in image quality (sharpness) can be perceived. Now researchers from Intel found a way around this error by using different sampling for rendering, therefore potentially increasing the image quality of all current and future HMDs with a wide field of view." Rather than applying barrel distortion to the final raster image, the researchers warp the scene geometry during rasterization. However, it currently requires ray tracing so it's a bit computationally expensive. Note that a vertex transformation can be used (with tessellation used to enhance the approximation), but the results are of variable quality.
Shark

Finally, a Shark With a Laser Attached To Its Head 139

Freshly Exhumed writes in with a Wired story about a nerd/super-villian dream come true. "Marine biologist-cum-TV personality Luke Tipple attached a 50-milliwatt green laser to a lemon shark off the coast of the Bahamas in late April. The escapade was sponsored by Wicked Lasers, a consumer-focused laser manufacturer based in Hong Kong that produces some of the most brilliant — and potentially dangerous — handheld lasers in the world. 'This was definitely a world first,' Tipple told Wired. 'Initially, I told them no. I thought it was a frivolous stunt. But then I considered that it would give us an opportunity to test our clips and attachments, and whatever is attached to that clip, I really don't care. It was a low-powered laser that couldn't be dangerous to anyone, and there's actually useful applications in having a laser attached to the animal.'"

They're going to be stuck in the same position that Palm was only 3 years further down the line in technology. QNX is pretty slick but they're going to have to encourage (bribe) developers and keep pushing the way Microsoft has with Windows Phone if they want to have a prayer... Every day they wait on hardware is a slightly smaller chance of any kind of success.

I own an Evo View 4G (basically a sprint version of the HTC Flyer) and it is amazing for notes and drawing. it feels solid in your hand and has very little creak (if any) it connects to Evernote natively in its note taking app and works well. the 7" tablet is big enough to be useful without being so large as to get in the way on small lecture hall desks and an otterbox defender case is coming out that will allow you to use it as an easel.

I'm having a hard time understanding how it's a bad thing. The proposal should get voter approval in the municipality to be serviced. It shouldn't be run as a government agency, but more of a service to customers. The stipulation of the program not being able to offer services below cost doesn't even seem to be a bad idea. Where is the story here?

has more to do with throwing up enough roadblocks to give big business ISPs enough time to say 'oh, look, they're going to create an ISP. let's go roll it out now so that we can hold onto our monopoly'
