Submission + - How a 'Seismic Cloak' Could Slow Down an Earthquake (vice.com)

Daniel_Stuckey writes: The United States is currently gripped in a bout of earthquake mania, following a series of significant tremors in the West. And any time Yellowstone, LA, or San Francisco shakes, people start to wonder if it's a sign of The Big One to come. Yet even after decades of research, earthquake prediction remains notoriously hard, and not every building in quake-prone areas has an earthquake-resistant design. What if, instead of quaking in our boots, we could stop quakes in their tracks?

Theoretically, it's not a crazy idea. Earthquakes propagate in waves, and if noise-canceling headphones have taught us anything, it's that waves can be absorbed, reflected, or canceled out. Today, a paper published in Physical Review Letters suggests how that might be done. It's the result of French research into the use of metamaterials—broadly, materials with properties not found in nature—to modify seismic waves, like a seismic cloaking device.

The word "monopoly" comes to mind.

Submission + - Ex-Apple engineers build one cool thermostat (networkworld.com)

coondoggie writes: "So what do you do after you've helped build the IPod? Build wicked cool thermostats of course. That's what ex- Apple engineer Tony Fadell, who is now the founder and CEO of Nest, which this week rolled out its Learning Thermostat. Fadell is considered the creator of the iPod.

The $249 Nest Learning Thermostat looks and acts different from your basic small white or beige plastic box hanging on most walls. It is round and made of brushed stainless steel that uses an iPod-like control wheel for manual setting. But the real difference is its smarts and ability to be controlled via an iPhone or Android device via WiFi."

Submission + - Vietnamese rhino goes extinct (mongabay.com) 1

roat35 writes: Poachers shot and killed the world's last Vietnamese rhinoceros (Rhinoceros sondaicus annamiticus) for its horn confirms a report from International Rhino Foundation (IRF) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). A subspecies of the Javan rhino, the Vietnamese rhino was the last Javan rhino to survive on the Asian mainland and the second subspecies to vanish, following the extinction of the Indian Javan rhino (rhinoceros sondaicus inermis). The Javan rhino is the world's most imperiled rhino species with now only around 50 individuals surviving in a single park on its namesake island in Indonesia.

Not surprising. I bet that the bottom 80% of AppStore developers are the same people who are releasing the garbage that is currently drowning out the (relatively) few number of well executed apps available. At least 80% of the AppStore content consists of copycat apps and pure trash. Think Angry Avians, DoodleHop, and iFlatulate.

Garbage In / Garbage Out. It's as simple as that.
