Submission + - Music while programming 6

BubbaDoom writes: In our cublicle-ville, we have programmers intermixed with accounting, customer support and marketing. As a programmer, it is our habit to put on our headphones and listen to our portable music players to drown out all of the noise from everyone else. The boss recently sent an email just to the programmers demanding that we do not use our music players at work because he thinks it distracts us from our jobs and causes us to make mistakes. Of course we've explained to him that the prattle from the other people is much much more distracting but he insists his policy is the right one. What is the /. community's experience with music at work for programmers?

If we can shoot the spammers, can we then go after the dolts on tv selling snake oil as well?

I'd go after the guys who sell:
Get Rich in Real-Estate books
Medical Crap that people don't want you to know books
Spray this crap in your dog dish to make them feel better
FreeCreditReport.com
FinallyFast.com
Get-out-of-debt
Send us your gold
Class-action-law-suit for some health condition
and any kind of exercise equipment.

If we legalize marijuana, that means we are going to tax it and collect taxes on it. Do you think the price of marijuana in the store will be more or less than the price you can pay on the street? So, if you buy it from your friend, but you didn't pay tax on it to the government, is that a legal transaction? Will the government classify your weed as illegal and seize it? (Think of moonshine ...)

Also, what makes you think the government is competent enough to pass a law that won't benefit big business somehow and screw something else over?

I had to take a personality test several years ago and the HR manager showed me my results. After she read the results, I told her that they were interesting, but as valid as my horoscope. Its like a psychic - they'll say a lot of things, some things might even be true, but these things are true for everyone to some extent.

My interviewing policy is to hire people who I want to work with, their skills are secondary.

Great. Lets say for arguments sake that global warming is a reality. What the heck are we supposed to do about it? Even if no more green house gas goes into the atmosphere starting Jan 1, 2009, the climate will still change. AFAIK there is no solution proposed to reverse the trend of GW.

And if the US/Western nations decides to crack down on green house gases, India and China aren't going to - they aren't about to stop their industrial revolutions.

We're as doomed as doomed can be.
