Comment Multiple IPs and Ports (Score 1) 582

I run into this with clients occasionally. I don't do onsite development work unless I am able to bring my own dev laptop and screens and other equipment including a hardware firewall between their network and my machine. And I don't use their email servers. I've been fortunate that it hasn't been rejected so far. Some clients only allow http/https access going out. I set up my dedicated server with multiple IP addresses for ports 80 and 443 that reroutes for pop/smtp, terminal services, etc... I ask the client first and show them my routing setup. Usually their policies are in place for non IT people and they just don't have different network policies for various departments.

I removed the lens from my old one and made a mount so I could insert the board into a cut down sink drain pipe. I use it in my telescope so while I'm controlling it from the laptop I can also see what the telescope is pointed to on the screen. No more having to look through the eyepiece. With some experimentation on focal lengths you can get the raw CCD bathed in outer space goodness, and running Stellarium at the same time is a plus. The Lunary Planetary Imager for this scope is about $100 USD and doesn't work as well.

I have some great videos of the moon and really good captures of Saturn and Jupiter. Now if I could just get my neighbors to agree that they don't need 6 lights on during the night. I treasure trips to the NorthWest. I have eagle vision and can see the rings of Saturn with the naked eye if they aren't straight on. By see, I mean I can detect they are there, but only in the deep desert or in the NorthWest.

I know this accounts for only 1, but it is a start.

You must never have served. There have always been gays in the service, usually left alone if they do their jobs.

Agreed. At least that was my experience. I've served with gays/lesbians in peace time and in war in a combat zone. But I've served with people that had other alternate thoughts of the world not relating to gender that also got them ousted. Like this guy that looked at his military career as a soapbox to preach on the flightline, or this other dude that thought it would be a great way to introduce people to the kkk, or this other lady that was so into Amway that she was always trying to sell on the job and couldn't get any work done. We had a guy that refused to take showers that was tossed. We had servicemen and women discharged for extra-marital affairs. If you are profoundly for heterosexuality, homosexuality, forcing your religion, or the kkk, or the black panthers or whatever I don't give a crap and I think most service members don't either. I don't want to know, I just want you to do your job. But if you want to take an unprofessional stance of letting it affect your profession and others it crosses the line.

We were weapons people on the flight line and attached for close combat support. Granted we didn't catch the hell that ground troops do. We only got missile and rocket attacks, a few suitcase bombs etc..., and we didn't lose a lot of people. I actually liked the concept of DADT in the spirit of the name but implementation was silly, and it wasn't really necessary. I think it should be an unwritten rule. Don't ask and don't tell about anything. For all I know someone could be seriously into monkey porn. Enjoy your monkeys but don't bring monkey pictures to share with the rest of your unit. Mind your own business and don't let your business affect others. There are already rules in the UCMJ covering political expression, performance, and behavior while in uniform. There are rules about public displays of affection. I never held my wife's hand or kissed her in public while in uniform because we were ordered not to. When you raise your hand and take the oath you are military property. At least that is how I understood it. You don't go to political causes in uniform, there are strict fraternization rules, and you do your job.

We had gays and lesbians going to ball games and social events and nobody really cared. They were good troops and most held up well in wartime just like most others held up well. When it became an issue it was because it affected work or affected living arrangements for other soldiers. Just like the preacher/kkk/amway/blahblahblah issues did. We did have some issues where communal facilities (like showers) were involved and some issues with dorm roommates. In the shower incident it was a guy looking at another dude's package and he got excited and made a physical advance with touching involved. In the dorm room incident it was a guy stroking his puppet while standing naked near his sleeping roommate. In my mind that is a sex crime and they would be ousted anyway. To me the shower thing is the rough one and is difficult to manage simply because of resource allocation. If some other guy is getting wood while winking and staring at your goodies that is a wee bit uncomfortable. Avert your eyes guys!

Grad Student Invents Cheap Laser Cutter 137

An anonymous reader writes "Peter Jansen, a PhD student and member of the RepRap community, has constructed a working prototype of an inexpensive table-top laser cutter built out of old CD/DVD drives as an offshoot of his efforts to design an under $200 open-source Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) 3D printer. Where traditional laser cutters use powerful, fixed-focus beams, this new technique dynamically adjusts the focal point of the laser using a reciprocating motion similar to a reciprocating saw, allowing a far less powerful and inexpensive laser diode to be used. The technique is currently limited to cutting black materials to a depth of only a few millimeters, but should still be useful and enabling for Makers and other crafters. The end-goal is to create a hybrid inexpensive 3D printer that can be easily reconfigured for 2D laser cutting, providing powerful making tools to the desktop."

Man Takes Up Internal Farming 136

RockDoctor writes "'A Massachusetts man who was rushed to hospital with a collapsed lung came home with an unusual diagnosis: a pea plant was growing in his lung.' Just that summary should tell you enough to work out most of the rest of the details, but it does raise a number of questions unaddressed by the article: How did the pea roots deal with the patient's immune system? What would have happened if the situation had continued un-treated? I bet the guy has a career awaiting him in PR for a pea-growing company."

Boy Builds Wall-Climbing Machine Using Recycled Vacuums 96

Joe McIntosh writes "Hibiki Kono just might be a boy genius. The 13-year-old decided he wanted to climb vertical surfaces like his hero, Spiderman. So, he used two 1,400-watt recycled vacuum cleaners and a little bit of elbow grease to make a machine that allows him to scale walls. Kono has been scaling the walls of his UK school and has told the media that he hopes his invention will help window washers eliminate clumsy ladders from their daily routine."

36-Hour Lemmings Port Gets Sony Cease and Desist 268

Zerocool3001 writes "The recently featured 36-hour port of the original Palm version of Lemmings to the iPhone and Palm Pre has received a cease and desist letter from Sony. Only one day after submitting the app for approval on the two app stores, the developer has put up a post stating that he 'did this as a tribute to the game — we can only hope that Sony actually does a conversion for platforms like iPhone and Palm Pre in the near future.' The text of the cease and desist letter is available from the developer's website."

Supermassive Black Hole Is Thrown Out of Galaxy 167

DarkKnightRadick writes "An undergrad student at the University of Utrecht, Marianne Heida, has found evidence of a supermassive black hole being tossed out of its galaxy. According to the article, the black hole — which has a mass equivalent to one billion suns — is possibly the culmination of two galaxies merging (or colliding, depending on how you like to look at it) and their black holes merging, creating one supermassive beast. The black hole was found using the Chandra Source Catalog (from the Chandra X-Ray Observatory). The direction of the expulsion is also possibly indicative of the direction of rotation of the two black holes as they circled each other before merging."

State Senator Caught Looking At Porn On Senate Floor 574

Everyone knows how boring a debate on a controversial abortion bill can get on the Senate floor. So it's no wonder that Florida State Sen. Mike Bennett took the time to look at a little porn and a video of a dog running out of the water and shaking itself off. From the article: "Ironically, as Bennett is viewing the material, you can hear a Senator Dan Gelber's voice in the background debating a controversial abortion bill. 'I'm against this bill,' said Gelber, 'because it disrespects too many women in the state of Florida.' Bennett defended his actions, telling Sunshine State News it was an email sent to him by a woman 'who happens to be a former court administrator.'"

How Nintendo's Mario Got His Name 103

harrymcc writes "In 1981, tiny Nintendo of America was getting ready to release Donkey Kong. When the company's landlord, Mario Segale, demanded back rent, Nintendo staffers named the game's barrel-jumping protagonist after him. Almost thirty years later, neither Nintendo — which continues to crank out Mario games — nor Segale — now a wealthy, secretive Washington State real estate developer — like to talk about how one of video games' iconic characters got his name and Italian heritage. Technologizer's Benj Edwards has researched the story for years and provides the most detailed account to date."

Testing the Safety of Tasers On Meth-Addled Sheep 253

Funded in part by Taser International, a recent study was done to learn the effects of being tasered while on methamphetamines. Since someone would probably complain about researchers going around and tasering meth addicts, they used sheep instead. From the article: "The less-lethal device of choice was the Taser X26, a standard law enforcement tool which can fire at suspects from a distance of 35 feet. Researchers shocked sixteen anesthetized sheep after dosing the animals with an IV drip of methamphetamine hydrochloride. Some of the smaller sheep weighing less than 70.5 pounds suffered exacerbated heart symptoms related to meth use. But neither the smaller nor larger sheep showed signs of the ventricular fibrillation condition, a highly abnormal heart rhythm that can become fatal."

Girl Claims Price Scanner Gave Her Tourette's Syndrome 558

Attorneys for Dominica Juliano claim that she was burned and developed psychological problems after a store clerk aimed a hand-held price scanner at her face. Store attorneys say their scanners uses a harmless LED light and that the girl had serious health problems before she was scanned. From the article: "Dominica Juliano was 12 when she and her grandmother entered the Country Fair store in Erie in June 2004. A clerk allegedly called the girl 'grumpy' before flashing his hand-held bar code scanner over her face and telling her to smile. Attorneys for Ms. Juliano and her guardian say the girl was sensitive to light and burned, and later developed post-traumatic stress and Tourette's syndrome."
