Open source gives you several great advantages. You don't give it to your company, but you get the credit anyways, while maintaining control of the project. The company gets to use it and you get the advantages you spoke of at work. You also improve your resume globally.

Unraid works well for a home solution. I had 2x2 TB drives fail within a one month period of time and lost no data.

I remember a slashdot article some time back about the permanence of the internet. I have friends that have been unable to 'start over' because of this very fact. Combining that reality with a requirement for real names is dangerous. Some comment you made on Facebook 25 years before will impact your ability to get a job, run for public office, etc.

Does an app exist that will slightly adjust your files so as to change hashes, etc? Bulk processing? Seems like it would be a pretty easy way to launder your collection.
Wuala is a really great client for this, and also comes with other nice-to-haves you may not have considered such as sharing, security and previous version access.

I prefer KeePass + Wuala for even more security. I set up the KeePass file in a synced folder so I can use KeePass to login to Wuala.
