considering that Medicare/Social Security is paid for by anyone working in the United States (called FICA - Federal Insurance Contribution Act), I have no issue with the government collecting information in regards to that. Unemployment is partly paid for by everyone who works in the United States (2% tax rate called FUTA - Federal Unemployment Tax Act). As to stuff like the FDIC, it's not me that pays for that nor does my financial institution have to carry it (they're not a bank but a credit union). As to things like tax credits, energy conservation efforts, law enforcement and such are paid for by property taxes. Road and Transportation taxes are a combination of tax on Fuel and commercial vehicles along with Vehicle Registration Fees, that do not impact me on a regular basis as I don't buy fuel nor do I own a vehicle that requires a license plate.

Even MS Office can not guarantee 100% compatibility with other versions of MS Office Documents. This is especially important to know if you are more then 2 generations behind (Office 2010) is the break point. I've had issues with docs from Office 2003 being screwed up by 2010 and those are local to my system. So if I have problems with formats from 2 generations before (office 2007 doesn't give me problems) then how in hell can you ensure that your latest Office 365 hasn't been updated to actually corrupt anything other then the latest version of Office-xxxx? This is how MS locks you into using the fucking products.

how about the fact that running Win7-64, my HP is as close to silent as I've heard yet with 8/8.1 the god damn CPU fan kept cycling between 15 - 50 percent speed. What in hell is 8 doing that's hitting the fucking CPU that hard that 7 doesn't do as it certainly doesn't give me hope for decent battery life on a fucking tablet.

Hashes are useless for source code as they don't tell you if the code is virgin or not. The only secure method is to use GPG signatures on the source code (apt-get/rpm/emerge) can all check them if configured. In the FLOSS world, you also have distro repositories that are generally trusted as they're controlled by the distro itself and packages are signed with the distro key. Much better then a binary hash.

Basically, anything above 1024 is classified as the High Range as they're available to a User and not restricted to Administrator/Root privlaged software and I've seen my client (Filezilla no less) use any range of ports above 1024 depending on the server config. Most that allow public/anonomous connections restrict those connections to 32768 and higher for logging purposes. Anyone attempting to connect to a low level port is blocked and logged (FTP.Microsoft.COM) is a good example. Lots of stuff to download there if you need windows patches and such for older versions along with other goodies.

the first family computer we had was a Tandy 1000 with deskmate. Nice interface, included some very useful tools and it predated WFW 3.11 while working far better. Now if I could only find my Tandy Dos (might even run on newer hardware). I've got a couple of old systems that may allow me to recover some of the files - had a music notation app included that we'd used to create a tune with. Want to recover that so I can at least print it out.

Next system was a Pentim 75 and it ran WFW3 until a power surge blew a chunk from the Southbridge. Ended up with an Acer running Win95 that was one hell of an improvement over WFW3.11 and it eventually saw Win98 upgrade. Many folks bitch about WinME but if you didn't upgrade the OEM hardware, it actually worked quite well (still have several systems that run it).
