jesus, I had forgotten about that product until you mentioned it. the first IT job I had involved LANtastic for the company's pitifully small LAN and an IBM System/36. We used their proprietary adapters to get 2MBit/sec! Ugh, that was also my introduction to the joy that was Windows for Workgroups....

Wow... that's some serious flashback from an epoch long past...

you make some good points, particularly WRT key-based auth and the ease of getting rid of users with access to elevated functions (short of the people who know root's pw, or have access to it).
well done - you've made a believer out of me.

Submission + - Universal and Sony Plan "Free" Music Servi (macworld.com)

Damon Tog writes: Macworld reports that Universal Music Group (UMG) has "enlisted" Sony to join forces in a new music service. The price of the subscription is expected to be built-in to the cost of digital music players, leaving the music "free" to the consumer. In other news, I have a $100 pencil that I need to sell. If you buy it, I will also throw in tickets to see Van Halen.

Submission + - NIN to release next album in GarageBand files

Tibor the Hun writes: Similar to what they did for their last CD, NIN have released a song from their upcoming CD as a multitrack GarageBand file. What's more, according to their website, they plan on releasing all of their songs from the upcoming release this way. For those amongst us looking at the world through broken windows, GarageBand is Apple's music recording and editing software.
It seems that NIN understand that involving fans into their music is actually good for their business. Hopefully we'll see more artists take this fan-friendly approach. Who knows, maybe some day Metallica will release a song of their own this way?
