I really can't think of any response more appropriate than this: you, sir, are a moron.

Try not to think, it will only cause your head to hurt.

Judging by the shallow depth of your wit, I will leave it to Samuel Clemens to respond; "In a battle of wits, it is poor sport to fight an unarmed man"

Submission + - Panasonic unveils thinnest Blu-ray Disc drive (computerworld.com)

Lucas123 writes: "Panasonic plans to unveil the thinnest Blu-ray Disc drive at the upcoming CES show. The drive is 9.5mm high, which allows it to fit into standard laptop form factors instead of requiring manufacturers to redesign systems to fit high-def DVD players as they've been doing. "Panasonic has already begun offering samples of the drives to laptop makers with the hope that the companies will build it into new PCs.""

Submission + - Google tracks you on torrent and porn sites 7

An anonymous reader writes: Think Google can only track you search habits? Think again. This site survey found that 40 of the top100 websites use Google-analytics as their web analysis software. Sites like mininova and youporn included. Google dominates the search engine world and now as a centralized service dominate the none-search website metrics. I am glad they do. I will be immortalized in Google databases as Google scientists of the future analyze my search habits, movies I like to see and types of girls I would like to meet.

Submission + - Politics for the non-political geek

garfnodie writes: Ok /. crowd, please help me here. I despise politics, I'm sure I'm not the first geek to say that, but I need to not despise it as much as I do. I'm 27 years old and have never voted, not for a president, governor or anything else. I have tried to read up on current political issues, but everytime I do, I get so bored I loose interest and stop reading. I tell myself that it's important and I should continue to read, but I just won't retain the knowledge and learn from it if it does not interest me. So I'm coming to the /. people for help. Are there any good and engaging resources out there for the non-political geek such as me. Something that is well writen, informative, engaging, accurate and up-to-date that I could use to finally feel ready to vote in the upcoming elections. Thanks.

Submission + - PGE Launches Nations 1st Solar Powered Billboard (techluver.com) 1

Tech.Luver writes: "Pacific Gas and Electric Company today unveiled the nation's first solar-powered billboard, located in San Francisco, Calif. The billboard is part of the utility's new advertising campaign, titled "We Can Do This", which features information about a variety of programs and services PG&E offers that reflect the company's commitment to the environment. The nation's first solar-powered billboard is prominently located at 1000 Brannan Street in San Francisco, visible from the Highway 101 9th Street exit. It is outfitted with 20 solar modules that can provide up to 3.4 kilowatts of renewable solar energy to the PG&E grid. The power generated by the system exceeds the power used at night to illuminate the billboard's lights. In addition to installing solar, PG&E replaced the billboard's halophane light fixtures with energy-efficient LED lights. Submission + - Spintronics Research Makes Major Breakthrough (eurekalert.org) 1

Invisible Pink Unicorn writes: "Spintronics is the field of research into developing devices that rely on electron spin rather than electron charge. A major advance has been made by the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), where they have for the first time generated, modulated, and electrically detected a pure spin current in silicon, the semiconductor used most widely in the electronic device industry. Progress in this field is expected to lead to devices which provide higher performance with lower power consumption and heat dissipation. Basic research efforts at NRL and elsewhere have shown that spin angular momentum, another fundamental property of the electron, can be used to store and process information in metal and semiconductor based devices. The article abstract is available from Applied Physics Letters."

Submission + - The robot with a soft touch

TheLostSamurai writes: Reuters is carrying a story about a robot strong enough to help lift a man out of bed and gentle enough to pick up a loaf of bread without crushing it. "Twendy-One, named as a 21st century edition of a previous robot, Wendy, has soft hands and fingers that gently grip, enough strength to support humans as they sit up and stand, and supple movements that respond to human touch." The manufacturer's site has several videos of the robot in action.

Submission + - Surfer stuns physicists with theory of everything (telegraph.co.uk) 1

j823777 writes: GARRETT LISI is an unlikely individual to be staking a claim for a theory of everything. He has no university affiliation and spends most of the year surfing in Hawaii. In winter, he heads to the mountains near Lake Tahoe, California, to teach snowboarding. Until recently, physics was not much more than a hobby.

That hasn't stopped some leading physicists sitting up and taking notice after Lisi made his theory public on the physics pre-print archive this week (www.arxiv.org/abs/0711.0770). By analysing the most elegant and intricate pattern known to mathematics, Lisi has uncovered a relationship underlying all the universe's particles and forces, including gravity — or so he hopes. Lee Smolin at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics (PI) in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, describes Lisi's work as "fabulous". "It is one of the most compelling unification models I've seen in many, many years," he says.

Submission + - Microsoft sues dentist for cybersquatting 1

Stony Stevenson writes: Microsoft has filed a trademark infringement suit against a California dentist who has registered more than 40 Internet domains with names similar to the software maker's products or brands. The domains registered by Dr. Saed Said are "identical or confusingly similar" to Microsoft's trademarks, the company claims in court papers. The domain names registered by Said include aMicrosoftShop.com, aMicrosoftStore.com, XboxOutlet.info, and XboxMarket.mobi. The company has asked the court to order Said to pay it up to US$100,000 per infringing domain plus additional damages. It also wants control of the domain names. Microsoft estimates that 24 percent of all .com and .net domain names are "parked" by cybersquatters.

Submission + - ELP! - first letter always missing!

Pivot writes: A large number of users are complaining that their keyboard misbehaves after upgrading to the latest version of OS X, Leopard.

The topic "ELP! — first letter always missing!" has over 12 thousand views on the apple discussion board, and some users have even returned their machines in despair, with Apple being completely silent about the issue and refusing to acknowledge there being a problem.

The problem mostly manifests itself as the first key typed in a text area / window being completely ignored, but sometimes also even random keypresses are dropped. Some users believe that the problem occur only when there are exernal USB devices attached, and mostly with MacBook Pros. It's being suspected that a large number of users are experiencing the problem without even knowing that it might be a problem with the machine or software itself, believing that they simply "need to bang a little harder on the keyboard".

This problem is now showing up all over the net as more and more people switches to macs.
