I haven't worked at any giant corporations where they would use Excel for mission critical databases. They wouldn't use PHP either but that's because they mistrust free stuff unless it comes from a corporation like Microsoft.

THIS. A truly giant corporation has a huge bank account they protect with teams of lawyers that are terrified by the various open source licenses, mainly because there's no indemnity built into most (all?). That's why we just moved off of IE6, getting Firefox requires EXECUTIVE approval, Chrome is only mentioned in hushed tones and getting an upgraded version of Eclipse requires an act of congress.

I haven't come to a solid conclusion about the Toyota thing, but I'm leaning to human error.

As to the idea of "power steering and hydraulic braking" becoming detached from the system, that's becoming increasingly difficult these days. ABS/Stability control are often tied to the ability of the computer to work the ABS pump. Power steering is increasingly becoming electric as a fuel efficiency measure. Some are using speed to determine the amount of assist to provide the driver. While the latter has been done with hydraulic power assist, electric makes this significantly more simple.

The power steering and braking get disabled when the car is shut down, as they're driven by engine power. In the TFA it said that the only way to fix the error was to turn the car off. Try shifting to neutral and killing the engine sometime (in a deserted parking lot of course!) and you'll most likely notice that the steering and braking both become MUCH more difficult.

Couldn't we make this much more difficult if we simply required the item sale and the shipping to be charged to 2 different credit cards from the same billing address if the shipping address on the order isn't the same as the billing address on the card used? Sure it would make buying and shipping Christmas presents a bit more of a hassle, but the crook would need TWO of your cards in order to fraudulently buy anything.

Could be a terrible idea, but seems pretty simple and only a minor inconvenience.

IAAFLLU (I am a former little league umpire) - I'd be all for having a sensor based ball/strike call. Nothing more annoying than having 1/2 the fans yelling strike and 1/2 yelling ball ... over a game for 9yr olds. A simple red/green light somewhere would be perfect. In my opinion the home plate ump is still needed though to ensure that foul balls are picked up properly and judge if the batter swung or not (some of those calls are really close). Not to mention tag out situations. If the system was a simple boolean limited to "was the ball in the strike-zone" or not I think it could improve the game by a large amount.

If you read the link he provided you would have noticed that the weight bias of the car only changed by about 1%, and the car only gained 200lbs. If the rotary was significantly lighter than the stock engine, it could screw up the handling much worse by unweighting the front end, causing understeer issues. Big hp numbers don't mean it's useless around corners ... or was that because it's an American V8?

I'm also curious why they hardly mention a word about virtual reality. Seems to me like an OBVIOUS application for this device. Put it together with a Kinect sensor and you'd have a pretty kick-ass setup.

I'd be surprised if they didn't have at least some optical adjustment. Most cameras have had adjustable viewfinders for a long time.

That's a kick ass setup right up to the point that you pretend lightsaber through the front of your TV :)

Yep. All hail the Nexus S! Seriously, it's the only smartphone I considered just because I knew I wouldn't have to deal with the the ATT bullshit preloaded. Sure it doesn't have the latest whizbang 3D or a crazy large screen, but it does have a gorgeous amoled screen, a decent processor and a clean OS. Only thing I wish it had was an SD slot ... but with 16gb on board I should still be ok. Still I'd rather have the expansion slot if needed.
