Submission + - Man cured of HIV (gizmodo.com)

Genocaust writes: For the first time, a man has been declared officially cured of HIV. The remedy may nearly have killed him, but it opens a door—just a crack—to hope that we may someday kill off the scourge for good.

Submission + - Is a curveball an optical illusion? (wired.com)

droopus writes: We've all seen great curveballs, even from AJ Burnett once in a while. The average curveball hurls toward a batter at around 75 mph, accentuated by a 1500-rpm spin. From the moment the ball leaves the pitcher's hand, it travels a smooth, consistent, parabolic arc. There's no disjointed change in its motion from beginning to end.

Yet as the ball nears home plate, the batter observes a sudden jump in its trajectory, the notorious break. A new study in PLoS ONE argues that the discrepancy between the physics and the perception of the curveball may be all in the mind, more specifically, an optical illusion created by the batter's eyes and brain.

Baseball has always been a game of statistics and illusions but now maybe we're seeing why a well-pitched baseball is so damn hard to hit. Video too!

In addition, there's a link to researcher Arthur Shapiro's lab website which has lots of nifty optical illusion things to play with.

Submission + - Flying pigeon beats broadband to deliver movie fil (bbc.co.uk)

Genocaust writes: A carrier pigeon has flown a computer memory card between two counties quicker than a rural computer could upload a five minute video to the web.

In a race, designed to highlight rural broadband problems, campaigners began to upload the video as the bird left East Yorkshire for Lincolnshire.

It took Rory the pigeon about 80 minutes to deliver the files from Beverley to Wrangle, easily beating the time it took the computer.

But the trick behind this is that it only works with an active data plan. Broken much? There is still no way to use a BB on T-Mobile functionally without paying for a data plan (except making calls, but who does that?). I can use 100% of the features on my G1 over WiFi only; no data plan needed.

Dumping tickets aside, what about for memorabilia sake? Growing up I sure kept every ticket stub I had since it was the only memorabilia I could afford and I was never lucky enough to snag a pick/drum stick/shirt/etc. I've also had a problem of buying tickets for a group and having 1 or more people back out last minute -- it seems silly to waste seats to a good show, so I've always ended up just giving them away to anybody who will take them.

For those of you complaining about this, please note that it was "per the ToS". Don't like it? Don't use the (Android) software, then. It's a free market -- vote with your money elsewhere. Until this remote nuke feature is used on something I've PAID for, and I'm left without my app or my money, I'm not too bothered by it as, again, I AGREED TO THE TOS.

Vista and Win 7 both worked out of the box with zero issues for me; Win 7 even on my 2006 laptop (which it detected the brand/model correctly, to boot). No problems with my Linux Samba shares at all -- looks like user error on your part.
