And yes, cfls don't like frequent starting. There's a filament in them that only gets used during startup.

Cfl's are often driven too hard. Especially the small bright ones. They squeeze more juice through them than is good for them, to make them emit more light. The clunky not too bright ones should laster longer. I have good experiences with the ones from ikea. Exactly the same applies to bright led bulbs also. Lumens sell, low price sells -> squeeze more juice though fewer or lower grade led's.
