Comment Re:Family Provide Our Best Stories (Score 1) 855

We have had issues with users taking our OS CDs/DVDs from our helpdesk either accidentally or intentionally. A few months ago we set out to create custom labels for all our discs to make it quite clear that we didn't want them walking off.

A user walked in a couple weeks after we had fixed her computer and stated that they wanted very much to use their optical drive but she was afraid to take out the disc labeled in large font "DO NOT REMOVE."

Submission + - A Little E-Mail Prank, $2.8 Billion Dollar Panic

VariableGHz writes: "
Just before 10 a.m. Wednesday, a spoof e-mail posing as an internal Apple news alert was sent to Apple employees, informing them that the release of the iPhone, a touchscreen hybrid phone-and-music player, was being delayed from June to October. It added that Leopard, the next version of the Mac operating system, would move back its launch from October to January.

... 11:56 a.m., a trading frenzy of Apple stock hit Wall Street, and the company's market value plunged $2.8 billion, or 3 percent, in six minutes. Its stock plummeted from $107.89 to $104.61 by 12:02 p.m.

Submission + - PowerPoint is dull

larytet writes: "PowerPoint has a hypnotic effect and this is not a coincidence. The challenge is processing the written and spoken word at the same time. "PowerPoint presentations can backfire if the information on the screen is the same as that which is verbalized because the audience's attention will be split between the two," said John Sweller, a researcher from the University of New South Wales, in a statement released through the university. Submission + - Will Game Creators Take Another Look At Linux?

tinkertim writes: "I'm curious to hear the opinions of other Slashdotters regarding the future of Linux and Gaming. With core developers offering to write device drivers for free, major PC makers offering Linux as an installed OS and thousands of would be game authors trying to get noticed — do you think Linux users can realistically hope for more games? Why or why not?"

Submission + - Palm Fesses up to Linux Treo Plans

An anonymous reader writes: At its Analyst and Investor meeting today, Palm officially acknowledged that it is developing a new smartphone software platform with Linux at its core, and that it plans to introduce Treo smartphones running the new platform as soon as this year. As expected, Palm's new Linux platform will include a Palm OS 5 (aka Garnet) compatibility layer on top of a Linux kernel, thus forming a bridge to enable the thousands of developers — and numerous Palm OS applications — to support the new platform. 'We expect [the new Linux platform] to improve reliability and performance and stability of our Palm-based product and give us much more flexibility from a platform perspective,' CEO Ed Collagan said. 'For example, today it is not possible to do simultaneous voice and data product on Palm; we needed this functionality to be able to modernize the underlying core of that platform,' he added. The company will continue to support Windows Mobile, alongside its new Linux platform.

Submission + - Verizon FiOS requires Windows?

DarthWilber writes: Verizon FiOS is recently available in my area and I have been inundated with letters and phone calls from Verizon attempting to get me to sign up. The last call I received ended the spiel with "... If you meet the system requirements." When I asked what the requirements were, they asked if I was running Windows or Macintosh. I said I was running Linux. They said it won't work with Linux. When I inquired for the reason. I was met with "It just does."

Submission + - Gmail accidentally disables accounts

rockypg writes: "Gmail seems to have disabled several accounts, accidentally. Affected users are seeing cryptic messages about "lockdown on sector 6". What's interesting is that several users posting on that thread are complaining that important client information or presentations are locked up in their Gmail accounts and that their business is affected due to the outage."

Submission + - Intel Launches Core 2 Extreme QX6800 Quad Core

TrackinYeti writes: Intel officially launched its next Extreme Edition quad-core desktop processor today. The new Core 2 Extreme QX6800 has frequency parity with its dual-core counterpart, the Core 2 Extreme X6800 — sans the "Q". At 2.93GHz this makes the Core 2 Extreme QX6800 Intel's highest clocked quad-core desktop processor to date. Due to its 2.93GHz clock speed, the QX6800 is as fast as the Core 2 Duo Extreme X6800 while running single-threaded applications. However, running multi-threaded applications that can fully utilize the additional processing resources afforded by the quad-core design of the QX6800, the new Core 2 Extreme QX6800 shown here puts up significantly better performance numbers than any other desktop PC processor currently available.

Submission + - People Don't Hate to Make Desktop Apps.. Do They?

Annie Peterson writes: Paul Graham has been maknig the argument that desktop development is dead — That's his premise for declaring Microsoft dead as well, and he claims that no one out there likes to develop for the desktop anymore. But that's not true, or is it? Desktop development is easier, faster, more productive, and infitinetly more enjoyable — right? The question is, since Web Apps were originally built on desktop applications themselves, have the tables flipped? Or is it just wishful thinking?

Submission + - Xbox 360 To Support Blu-Ray?

Weather Storm writes: "Gameworld Network posted an interview of the Head of Xbox UK by the BBC about Microsoft's Xbox 360 potential support of Blu-Ray. Neil Thompson head of Xbox UK revealed that Microsoft will consider adding Blu-Ray support to the Xbox 360 if the public chooses it as their format of choice over HD-DVD. "Whatever format wins it is highly likely we will offer a solution. The only debate is if you want to watch Blu-ray movies and pay the extra money for that feature. We prefer to offer the consumer choice.""
