Submission + - 18 New Google Android Phones This Year (nytimes.com)

viyh writes: "By year's end, there will be at least 18 phones on the market worldwide based on the Android operating system, Google disclosed for the first time Wednesday.

Andy Rubin, senior director for Mobile Platforms for Google and the spearhead of the Android operating system, said the number could be as high as 20. (That figure does not include devices made by manufacturers that use a basic Android system but have not apprised Google of its use). The 18 to 20 devices Google knows about will be made by eight or nine different manufacturers, Mr. Rubin said.

He declined to say which manufacturers will make said phones or for which wireless carriers. At present, there are at least two Android-centric phones — T-Mobile's G1, available in the United States, and a phone called "Magic" made by HTC and available in Europe.

Mr. Rubin said that, in general, carriers will be slower to introduce Android phones in the United States than in Europe. The reason, he said, is that the domestic market is so competitive that carriers and handset makers want to create highly distinctive versions of the Android phone to give themselves an edge."

Submission + - Chemical Infofuses Communicate Without Electricity (technologyreview.com)

Al writes: "Researchers at Harvard and Tufts University have developed a way to encode messages without using electricity. David Walt, professor of chemistry at Tufts and Harvard's George Whitesides developed "infofuses" that can transmit information simply by burning. The fuses--metallic salts depositing on a nitrocellulose strand--emit pulses of infrared and visible light of different colors whose sequence encodes information. They were developed in response to a call from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for technologies to allow soldiers stranded without a power source to communicate. In the first demonstration of the idea, they used the infofuses to transmit the message "LOOK MOM NO ELECTRICITY.""

Comment Kentucky meme (Score 0, Offtopic) 519

Some posters have expressed confusion as to why this kind of article was even posted on /., but I have my own theory. The editors sometimes like to force memes down the readership's collective throats and this is one of those times, although the meme in question here is a little obscure.

People here in the past have tried to argue that Kentucky in general is stuck a decade or two behind the rest of the country... And pointing out the fact that old-school IBM keyboards are still manufactured here (just a few blocks away from a large and progressive research university, which I currently attend) is trying to stoke that stupid preconception.

How many times do we need to explain to the rest of you that we are wearing shoes and we can read and are using the latest technology at the same time.

It's kind of weird, interesting, and depressing to watch this history be made through NASA's Twitter updates:
  • The countdown has begun in California for the launch of NASA's Orbiting Carbon Observatory in less than 1 hour. The stars are out tonight!
  • Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO) update: Weather is perfect for launch in less than half an hour.
  • OCO launch update: Liftoff is now set for 4:55 EST. Catch it on www.nasa.gov/ntv
  • OCO launch update: WE HAVE LIFTOFF!
  • OCO launch update: We have Stage 3 ignition. The mission is off to a great start!
  • OCO launch update: We have a mission failure. Press briefing to be held at Vandenberg in approximately 2 hours.

Apparently not.

Sixth paragraph of TFA:

AOL, Yahoo! and MSN subscribers will continue to have access to content but will no longer be able to access their e-mail through the third party Web site. Instead, Yahoo! and other third party e-mail will be accessed directly at the MyFairPoint.net portal.

Feed Turkey basters find new use in head-mounted instrument (engadget.com)

While most of the musical instruments we cover are of the high-tech (or video game) variety, we can't help but be impressed by the ingenuity shown in inventor/musician Jim Miller's latest creation here. Dubbed the "Chord Hat," the homebrew contraption consists of three turkey basters that serve as peddles, which pump air to some party blow-outs mounted, naturally, on your head. In addition to providing some questionable musical accompaniment, they also serve to cue anyone else playing along to the proper chord. Still skeptical? Check out the whole thing in action after the break.
