Thank you for your insightful observations on mind preservation. You have confirmed a suspicion that I have harbored for decades. It will require that extremely overpaid newspaper 'talent' take the same kind of pay cuts forced on other workers wishing to save their industries. If the people who worked in these high profile reporting jobs were doing their business properly we wouldn't have been lied into war with Iraq over bogus WMD and 9-11 connection claims. Just look at all the in depth reporting they didn't do on Bernie Madoff over the last decade. A man supposedly buying and selling billions in stocks, but in retrospect we find out he never ever made a trade? How hard is that to figure out for chrissakes?? Enjoy.

Spectrum of Light Captured From Distant World 32

An anonymous reader writes with this excerpt from Cosmos: "Astronomers have made the first direct capture of a spectrum of light from a planet outside the Solar System and are deciphering its composition. The light was snared from a giant planet that orbits a bright young star called HR 8799 about 130 light-years from Earth, said the European Southern Observatory (ESO). ... The find is important, because hidden within a light spectrum are clues about the relative amounts of different elements in the planet's atmosphere. 'The features observed in the spectrum are not compatible with current theoretical models,' said co-author Wolfgang Brandner. 'We need to take into account a more detailed description of the atmospheric dust clouds, or accept that the atmosphere has a different chemical composition from that previously assumed.' The result represents a milestone in the search for life elsewhere in the universe, said the ESO. Until now, astronomers have been able to get only an indirect light sample from an exoplanet, as worlds beyond our Solar System are called. They do this by measuring the spectrum of a star twice — while an orbiting exoplanet passes near to the front of it, and again while the planet is directly behind it. The planet's spectrum is thus calculated by subtracting one light sample from another."

How To Judge Legal Risk When Making a Game Clone? 270

An anonymous reader writes "I'm an indie game developer making a clone of a rather obscure old game. Gameplay in my clone is very similar to the old game, and my clone even has a very similar name because I want to attract fans of the original. The original game has no trademark or software patent associated with it, and my clone isn't infringing on the original's copyright in any way (all the programming and artwork is original), but nevertheless I'm still worried about the possibility of running afoul of a look and feel lawsuit or something similar. How do I make sure I'm legally in the clear without hiring an expensive lawyer that my indie developer budget can't afford?"

Submission + - Scientist makes Flying Bot without Internal Power (singularityhub.com) 1

neural.disruption writes: Singularity Hub reports that a Canadian scientist has created a minuscule robot that does not needs an internal power source. It uses Magnetic Levitation to fly and has little grippers that open when heated by laser and then close slowly as the heat is lost. Even thought its controlled by magnetic fields it is claimed that it can be positioned with an accuracy of 13 microns.
Future applications for this kind of technology include microsurgery and working in hazardous environments as the robot can be controlled at a distance by magnetic fields and lasers.
