Comment My Mac crashes, in a worse way (Score 1) 364

Have been using a Mac at work for nearly a year now. Prior to that, used Win7 PC for 1.5 yrs. What I found surprising on the Mac, when I experience an app crash, the whole system freezes, locks up. I cannot do a single thing to close the process becuase I cannot launch anything via the UI.

I have not had such experience with the Win7 PC. Apps crashed, but never locked my system up.

Overall, both are rock-solid stable, with crashes occuring extremely infrequently, however, I do prefer Windows' way of handling crashes.

Take it for what it's worth.

Comment Pagan, common knowledge (Score 1) 470

There's nothing "Christian" about All Hallows Eve. It is common knowledge, and even says so in the link you yourself provided:

"The Halloween holiday is commonly thought to have pagan roots, even though the etymology of the word is Christian."

Perhaps "Christian" in the sense when pagan beliefs and Christianity were "fused" together under Constantine, thus forming Christendom, but certainly that would not be a practice for the first-century Christians.

There's a night and day difference between original Christians and the mainstream Christianity that followed.

Comment cars emit only 10% (Score 3, Informative) 196

I wish I bookmarked/copied/saved an article I came across a few years ago. It was a study/research paper that split emissions as follows:

personal automobiles - 10% diesel transport trucks, diesel trains - 90%

Not talking about CO2 emissions, but about other harmful gases. I applaud that we don't have smelly car exhausts, but not looking to regulate diesel trucks/trains is just like putting a band aid on a gushing wound.

Comment Hotmail SPAM filter... wait, they have one? (Score 5, Informative) 182

Let me be among the first to chime in... Their spam filter sucks big time.

For the past 6-8 months (or more), I've been getting spam for all sorts of services that originate from the same sender. They use the SAME template! It's just a series of images, with THE ONLY TEXT being "Can't see Images? Click here". I marked such sh!t as Junk countless times, only to come back the next day to seeing some of the same ones in my Junk filter, some in my Inbox.

It doesn't matter that the subject line is the same - advertising for Match.com or some other crap, even though I mark it as Junk, apparently Hotmail does not even pretend to do anything about it. Same subject line, same template with images only.

THIS IS BASIC SPAM FILTER 101, if there is no address, or Unsubscribe in the newsletter, or a poor text to image ratio, IT IS SPAM! What the hell is their spam team researching?

And it has the most worthless spam configuration settings: all off, the useless "ON" setting, or the idiotic "exclusive" from your contacts only.

Comment RIM is adapting, don't kid yourself (Score 1) 218

I'm sorry but what is RIM not changing? Just about everything? Hardware? Check. Software? Check.

RIM already has the enterprise market, and it is the most feature-rich mobile enterprise solution. Apple is inching to get there, but they are still a ways off.

While Apple is inching into enterprise, RIM is inching into consumer. They started at different positions, but attempting to cover both segments. Having said that, RIM will always be enterprise at heart, and apple will always be consumer at heart. Apple isn't known to be a particularly enterprise-oriented solutions provider.

[this coming from an iPhone user]

P.S. Ironically, perhaps Apple could fix their iPhone to be more consumer friendly by introducing such basic features as ringer profile management. And when it eventually does build it into the OS, not hail it as the greatest Cupertino invention for a smart phone, but humbly acknowledge its absence as a brain fart.

Because a user shouldn't have to read 15,000 word legal documents to understand what could be written in layman's terms in a point form spanning just a few pages.

In addition to full legal documentation, there should be a brief summary in point form for the average user to get a basic understanding of what's what. If he then wishes, he can gain more information from the legalese docs, or otherwise agree.

Comment bandwidth won't be billed (Score 1) 130

It's interesting that even now carriers can deduct bandwidth you use to connect through their app to get some help/assistance or account info. Akin to calling *611 which will not be counted toward your monthly minute allowance.

Which means Carrier IQ could be using up loads of bandwidth, but your carrier will not count it against your limit.

The only way to tell is to install a 3rd party bandwidth usage monitor, or by your battery life.
