Paro the Therapeutic Robot Baby Seal Screenshot-sm 52

Mike writes "Paro is a therapeutic baby seal robot that is exploring new dimensions in animal therapy. Created to act as a companion for hospital patients and the elderly, the adorable baby harp seal bot aims to increase relaxation and decrease stress. NASA Running Low On Fuel For Space Exploration 282

smooth wombat writes "With the end of the Cold War came warmer relations with old adversaries, increased trade and a world less worried about nuclear war. It also brought with it an unexpected downside: lack of nuclear fuel to power deep space probes. Without this fuel, probes beyond Jupiter won't work because there isn't enough sunlight to use solar panels, which probes closer to the sun use. The fuel NASA relies on to power deep space probes is plutonium-238. This isotope is the result of nuclear weaponry, and since the United States has not made a nuclear device in 20 years, the supply has run out. For now, NASA is using Soviet supplies, but they too are almost exhausted. It is estimated it will cost at least $150 million to resume making the 11 pounds per year that is needed for space probes."

Don't worry. The only way you could make "Rat Pr0n FTW" less funny is if you punched me in the face while I was reading it.

Comment Re:Older fathers have more autistic children (Score 0) 1056

Remember, correlation is not causation. There is very likely a strong genetic basis for autism. As such, the fathers of autistic children could well have some slight autistic traits that delay their social development. These late bloomers would be marrying and then having children at a later period in their lives.

I'm not saying that the above is fact, but that if this vaccine brouhaha can teach us anything it's to draw our conclusions with care.

CCC Create a Rogue CA Certificate 300

t3rmin4t0r writes "Just when you were breathing easy about Kaminsky, DNS and the word hijacking, by repeating the word SSL in your head, the hackers at CCC were busy at work making a hash of SSL certificate security. Here's the scoop on how they set up their own rogue CA, by (from what I can figure) reversing the hash and engineering a collision up in MD5 space. Until now, MD5 collisions have been ignored because nobody would put in that much effort to create a useful dummy file, but a CA certificate for phishing seems juicy enough to be fodder for the botnets now."
