Comment I buy new old music. (Score 1) 375

I think the best part of getting older is that well done music from pretty much any genre sounds enjoyable. I seem to appreciate complex music more, and also appreciate artist skill & abilities more. My musical taste continues to widen, and thus I encounter "new" music all the time. I agree that there's very little new music from the studios that entice me. The dynamic range has been compressed to the point of sounding poor. The new independent music produced on a limited budget sometimes sounds just... so simple, unprocessed, and refreshing. The most recent discovery old music is of Django Reinhardt. Check out the wiki on him. Then listen to what he made a guitar do. The discovery before that was Tommy Emmanuel. Youtube him. So much good stuff. It's old but all new to me.

Comment Re:License Management Software!? (Score 1) 410

Amen. I would like to wrap an old mouse cord around the neck of every vendor that uses yearly licensing with keys. It seems to be the method of choice to leverage companies when licensing comes due. I understand and agree with a specific number of floating seats license and running a license server. But yearly? Come on.

Submission + - TD Ameritrade says hacker stole customer info (usatoday.com)

gattaca writes: "From USA Today, TD Ameritrade (AMTD) said Friday that one of its databases was hacked and contact information for its more than 6.3 million customers was stolen. A spokeswoman for the brokerage said more sensitive information in the same database, including Social Security numbers and account numbers, does not appear to have been taken. The company would not share many details of its investigation, including when the hack took place, because it is still looking into the theft and is cooperating with investigators from the FBI. Ameritrade's customers have received unwanted e-mail ads because of the data theft. Spokeswoman Katrina Becker said there is no evidence that any customer suffered financial losses or was a victim of identity theft. Ameritrade plans to notify customers about the data theft Friday, and the brokerage posted information about it on its website."

Feed The Register: Philips looks to build 'huge' video database for video ID service (theregister.com)

Aims to fingerprint all video

When Philips Research fell out of the audio fingerprinting business in 2005, it obviously left something of a scar, with the business sold for an unspecified amount, but since it was just as the buyer, audio database specialist Gracenote, had just raised $10.9m, that was taken to be the amount. But talking to Alex Terpstra, the CEO of Philips Content Identification at IBC this week, it seems like it plans to achieve a better outcome in the world of video fingerprinting.
