Comment Re:Here's why (Score 0) 814

Customer Satisfaction Rating doesn't include one type of people, non-customers. Many people I know when the mac argument is brought up mentioned they used it at some point and just didn't like OSX. Some of these people found the ones they used had lock up problems with the rainbow pinwheel. One person I know claims he crashes any mac just by proximity (which he demonstrated on 2 occasions). The thing about macs is that people buying mac want to buy macs, and not many people buy a computer with a different Operating System unless they are sure they are gonna like it, so this rating could be considered meaningless.

Sure windows gets complaints but people are more likely to buy it because it is what they are used to, a considered necessary evil. But I theorize if you were to put the same user base using OSX you will get a similar percentage of user complaints on macs.

Submission + - Computer Engineering Vs. Computer Science 2

Tordre writes: "I am a student currently through working through my third year of Computer Engineering, I have been programming/learning about programing since middle school. I joined up into this course so one day I may work designing and developing video game. For the last two semesters I have been having problems with courses related to the analog electronic hardware, which are mandatory for my computer engineering program. This forces me to take time away from the stuff I find fun to learn about, to work to learn stuff I do not particularly care about. If I switch programs now I feel I can learn more about stuff I enjoy. So pretty much the question is "I am asking is this switch a wise one? Is the title of Engineer worth it for my career plans?" Any other suggestions would also be appreciated."

Submission + - Can Bill Gates Prevent the Next Katrina?

theodp writes: "He once controlled the world's PCs. Now Bill Gates has set his sights on controlling the world's weather. And patenting it. On Thursday, the USPTO revealed that Gates and ex-Microsoft CTO Nathan Myhrvold have filed five patent applications that propose using large fleets of vessels to suppress hurricanes through various methods of mixing warm water from the surface of the ocean with colder water at greater depths. The idea is to decrease the surface temperature, reducing or eliminating the heat-driven condensation that fuels the giant storms. Hey, a guy can only play so much golf in retirement."

Submission + - Software Converts 2D Images to 3D (3dsee.net)

eldavojohn writes: "Dr David McKinnon from Queensland University of Technology, has recently launched a site that turns your sets of 2D images into 3D bump maps by way of 8 years of his research. The catch is that you need to have between five and fifteen photos of your object and they must overlap at least 80 to 90 percent. So with a video of an object, one might be able to extract every nth frame and use this site to generate a 3D model. Doctor McKinnon said, "The full version of this software would be great for realistic learning simulators and training software, where you want everything to look like the real thing. This technology could also be great for museums wishing to turn their display objects into 3D images that can be viewed online. We are even looking into making 3D models of cows to save farmers spending thousands of dollars transporting their cattle vast distances to auction sites, allowing for an eBay style auction website for cattle. Films, animations and computer games could also benefit, since 3D film making is taking over from the traditional 2D method of filmmaking. Another application is allowing people to create 3D models of their own face to use on their avatar in computer games or 3D social networking sites such as Second Life or Sony's Home." Physorg has more details."

Comment How exactly is this still a bios? (Score 1) 394

I gave this a quick run on my net book to see what it was like, the first thing i have to say is "How is this still a BIOS?" Firstly I see the bios run, then i see the windows boot loader give me the option to choose from windows or the Hyper-visor.

Installation required 2 gb of space on the hard disk and makes no flashes to the bios of the computer.

As for running it ran like any other severely limited Linux environment. You know hardware not working and the GUI providing no methods to fix it your self. My processor did not support the hot swap OS function so i did not look at that but i still fail to see how even then it would be a bios.

The point i am trying to make is that really they are throwing out geeky words to make us on \. swoon while providing absolutely nothing of use or value.

Extra point, this is kinda like the Moblin 2.0 you had on yesterday only worse GUI(stylistically and by having glitches) and not compiled for a certain processor type.
