The excellent ChannelMaster antennae of the 1980s have been gone for awhile. ChannelMaster outsourced all their R&D and manufacturing to China years ago, with the result that the original CM4228 and CM4221 UHF bowtie reflector models were replaced with lesser, different models with almost identical names. Don't be fooled. Build a Gray-Hoverman instead.

Submission + - Unprecedented heat wave near North Pole (www.cbc.ca)

Freshly Exhumed writes: Weather watchers are focused on the world's most northerly community, which is in the middle of a record-breaking heat wave. "It's really quite spectacular," said David Phillips, Environment Canada's chief climatologist. "This is unprecedented." The weather agency confirmed that Canadian Forces Station Alert hit a record of 21 C on Sunday. On Monday, the military listening post on the top of Ellesmere Island had reached 20 C by noon and inched slightly higher later in the day.

Comment Not Gartner and IDC crap again... (Score 1) 73

Over the years, Gartner and IDC have been shown to be widely, wildly wrong about many things. Don't touch their data assessments with a 3 meter pole. Groklaw, Tomi T. Ahonen, and many others have shown those two outfits and others like Forrester to be useless for anything other than clickbait headlines.

Submission + - Jet-powered flyboard soars over Paris (theguardian.com)

HansiMeier33 writes: France’s annual Bastille Day parade showcased European military cooperation and innovation on Sunday, complete with a French inventor hovering above Paris on a jet-powered flyboard.

The former jetskiing champion and military reservist Franky Zapata clutched a rifle as he soared above the Champs-Élysées on his futuristic machine, which the French military helped to develop.

The board, which was first created to fly above water, can reach speeds of up to 190km/h and can run for 10 minutes.

Submission + - iOS 12.2 'Sock Puppet' Jailbreak Exploit Released on Github

Freshly Exhumed writes: In a treat for the iOS jailbreak community, Pwn20wnd has released unc0ver v3.3.0 betas 1 and 2 to the general public with official support for all firmware versions up to iOS 12.2. The exploit, named Sock Puppet, is intended to work on all A7-A11 devices bit excludes A12(X) devices. Submission + - SPAM: iOS 12.2 'Sock Puppet' Jailbreak Exploit Revealed

Freshly Exhumed writes: In what could only be described as a surprising treat for the jailbreak community, Pwn20wnd released unc0ver v3.3.0 betas 1 and 2 to the general public on Thursday with official support for all firmware versions up to iOS 12.2. This means that in addition to the previously-supported iOS 11.0-12.1.2, unc0ver now supports iOS versions 12.1.3, 12.1.4, and 12.2. From what we can gather, the Sock Puppet exploit is intended to work on all A7-A11 devices, and so naturally, it excludes A12(X) devices. In a follow-up Tweet, Pwn20wnd added that the exploit appears to be broken on 4K devices (namely the A7 and A8 varieties) at the time of this writing, but he is looking into fixing this. While the addition of this new exploit is wonderful news for potential jailbreakers who’ve been waiting for the opportunity to pwn their devices, Pwn20wnd does note that the Sock Puppet exploit brings with it some “reliability” issues. Unfortunately, he won’t be able to do much about this, as it’s par for the course for this particular exploit.

Submission + - Boeing falsified records of new 787 that leaked fuel, faces more 737 Max woes (www.cbc.ca)

Freshly Exhumed writes: Boeing staff falsified records for a 787 jet built for Air Canada which developed a fuel leak ten months into service in 2015. In a a statement to CBC News, Boeing said it self-disclosed the problem to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration after Air Canada notified them of the fuel leak. The records stated that manufacturing work had been completed when it had not. This revelation comes at a time that the FAA has announced further technical woes with Boeing's 737 Max jet's stabilizer trim, although the FAA did not elaborate if the problem could be solved with a software upgrade or would require a physical fix.

Submission + - NSA Improperly Collected US Phone Call Data After Saying Problem Was Fixed (usatoday.com)

An anonymous reader writes: The National Security Agency improperly collected phone call records of Americans last fall, months after a previous breach that compelled the agency to destroy millions of records from the contentious program, documents released Wednesday revealed. The redacted documents, obtained by the ACLU in a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit, do not indicate how many records NSA improperly collected in the October breach, nor which telecommunications provider submitted the improper data. "These documents provide further evidence that the NSA has consistently been unable to operate the call detail record program within the bounds of the law," the ACLU said in a letter to Congress this week lobbying for an end to the program. The letter says elements within the Office of the Director of National Intelligence concluded the October violations had a "significant impact" on privacy and civil rights, but that the Americans affected were not told of the breach.
