Submission + - Paul McCartney on music in the digital world

Rachhpal writes: "Paul McCartney, ex-Beatles member, will release his new album today, "Memory Almost Full". In an interview with L.A. Times, he indicated ending his long time relationship with EMI and making his album fully downloadable through his new relationship with Starbucks' new Hear Music Label. http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-ca-mc cartney3jun03,1,1265126.story?track=rss&ctrack=2&c set=true Some of his comments on the music industry currently from the interview: "I was bored with the old record company's jaded view," McCartney says, ..... "They're very confused, and they will admit it themselves: that this is a new world, and they're a little bit at a loss as to what to do. So they've got millions of dollars and X budget ... for them to come up with boring ways — because they've been at it for so long — to what they call 'market' it. And I find that all a bit disturbing."

Submission + - Reiser Murder Trial Gets Under Way

Frosty Piss writes: "The murder trial for Hans Reiser gets under way Monday in the disappearance of his wife Nina Reiser, a 31-year-old mother of two missing since September, and defense lawyers are trying to sow doubt about whether she is dead at all. The defense attorneys have suggested that Nina Reiser may be alive in her native Russia, where she lived until 1999, and that purported family ties to a Russian spy agency and organized crime may be connected to her disappearance. Prosecutors have argued that, even without a body, the physical evidence they have uncovered clearly implicates Hans Reiser. Bloodstains in Hans Reiser's house and car matched Nina Reiser's DNA, police said. Investigators searching Hans Reiser's Honda CRX after his wife's disappearance found trash bags, masking tape, absorbent towels and a floorboard soaked with water, and the car was missing its passenger seat."

Submission + - JPC is now open source (ox.ac.uk)

Miguel de Icaza writes: "JPC, the pure java x86 PC emulator, is one of the coolest things I've seen done with FreeDOS in the last few years. An early preview demonstration was previously discussed on slashdot, but it is now GPL licenced for all. It allows you to boot an instance of FreeDOS in a Java window on your web browser. From there, you can run programs, games, etc. This presents a wonderful opportunity to embed FreeDOS in other systems, or to increase the availability of FreeDOS and DOS applications to users. And now the JPC team has made an important announcement: "Further to your interest in JPC (pure java x86 PC emulator) we are pleased to announce that, with permission of Oxford University, the source code to JPC is now available via the GPL version 2 open source licence." To try JPC or download the source code, visit the project website at: http://www-jpc.physics.ox.ac.uk. But does it run linux?"

Submission + - Proof that women hate men. (blogspot.com)

Daringest on Sat, 2007-06-09 03:49. informs us:

The trial of Mary Winkler is saddening and disappointing, but it's not surprising. Women get away with murder probably everyday.

The foreman was on the jury this Friday morning on CourtTV. According to him the women on the jury wanted to acquit the murderess. He, the jury foreman, was disappointed by the verdict but said the decision was a compromise since the ten women on the jury wanted to set her free.

Lisa Bloom, host of the CourtTV program and daughter of famed misandrist Gloria Allred, said the defense attorney was smart to keep the platform heels next to the defendant when she was on the stand. Apparently, Mz. Bloom thinks this helped the female jurors to sympathize with and exonerate the murderess. If a man wants his wife or girlfriend to wear heels, he deserves to be killed.

When a man gets married, he gives his wife the right to take his life, as well as his rights and property.

What's interesting is that in another case some months ago, a man was sentenced to eight (8) years in jail for trespassing in a women's apartment and trying on her underwear. So women believe a man who tries on her underwear should be jailed for eight years but a woman has a right to kill a man just because she feels like it. Where's the "equality" here?""""

Submission + - CNBC Software Flaw Worth $1 Million?

Strudelkugel writes: In the past few months, Jim Kraber became more than a little obsessed with CNBC's "Million Dollar Portfolio Challenge." At the peak, the 42-year-old was spending 12 hours a day on the contest, using three computers in his Greenwich Village apartment to trade 1,600 different portfolios, all in an effort to win the $1 million grand prize. He even dropped his studies for the chartered financial analyst (CFA) exam, given once a year, so he could have more time for the financial news channel's game. He made it into the group of 20 finalists, but in mid-May, as the last round of trading opened, he noticed an unusual pattern in the picks of other contestants. One trader had a stream of near-perfect picks, consistently placing huge bets on shares that soared in after-hours trading. Kraber suspected the trader and perhaps others were getting help from someone who was changing their picks after the stocks' increases — and he quickly notified CNBC. "I went back and looked at his trades and thought, 'This is pretty much statistically impossible,'" says Kraber, who holds master's degrees in business and statistics from New York University. Kraber says CNBC rebuffed him at the time, but now it looks like he may have been right. Several contest participants have told BusinessWeek that there was a flaw in the design of the CNBC game that allowed certain players an unfair advantage. As many as four of the top contestants in the million-dollar contest may have exploited the flaw, according to the participants interviewed by BusinessWeek.

No name has been decided yet but there's a vote going on. The forums are currently at http://www.opencompositing.org/ and everyone currently using Beryl should check it in the next days or weeks to find information about the new merged project (setup instructions, etc) when they are available.

Submission + - The Man Behind the Google Doodle

theodp writes: "His drawings are viewed by nearly 180 million people a day. He's one of the most important graphic designers in the business world. And yet the mild-mannered 29-year-old keeps a low profile, devoting only a small fraction of his time to his art. Dennis Hwang is the Google doodler, the man whose hand-drawn alterations of the search engine's logo commemorate holidays, artists' birthdays, and other random events that the company deems important. His fans include James Watson, who asked for a signed print of the Google DNA logo."

Submission + - Slashdot is filtered in Iran !

Anonymous Coward writes: "It is a while that slashdot is filtered in Iran and other interesting and scientific sites are becoming banned one after another .People in Iran are used to see their favorite sites banned without any logical reason . It seems that a robot which is sensitive to specific words is used to control the passing traffic without any human supervision and there are no places to complain about or no one is going to be responsible about it. The main purpose of censorship was said to be stopping people's access to pornographic and political sites , The number of dedicated hosts in European countries are increased which are just used for VPN connections. In Iran, people simply know how to tunnel using softwares like VTUND and OpenVPN and where to buy VPN accounts . What they are doing is hiding their head under snow and claiming nothing's going on."
