Submission + - Tricking an iPod into trusting your dock (hackaday.com)

An anonymous reader writes: [Thijs] has an iPod dock with an LCD display in it that allows you to watch videos without having to squint quite as much. Unfortunately, the iPod classic wouldn't play videos on it because it's not an Apple approved product. He figured out that an authentication chip is included in docks and cables that Apple has approved and set out to retrofit his device with one. He pulled the PCB, authentication chip included, out of a $5 cable from Deal Extreme and wired it up to the PCB on his dock. Voila, the dock now plays video.

Submission + - Unusual space object, approaching Earth (spacefellowship.com)

xp65 writes: An unusual space body with parameters similar to a man-made object will approach Earth on Wednesday at a distance about three times less than the moon's orbit. The object, named 2010 AL30, will fly by Earth at a distance of at least 128,000 km (about 80,000 miles) at 12:48 GMT. As it is some 10-15 meters long, there is no chance it will directly impact the planet.

Mozilla Rolls Out Firefox 3.6 RC, Nears Final 145

CWmike writes "Mozilla has shipped a release candidate build of Firefox 3.6 that, barring problems, will become the final, finished version of the upgrade. Firefox 3.6 RC1, which followed a run of betas that started in early November, features nearly 100 bug fixes from the fifth beta that Mozilla issued Dec. 17. The fixes resolved numerous crash bugs, including one that brought down the browser when it was steered to Yahoo's front page. Another fix removed a small amount of code owned by Microsoft from Firefox. The code was pointed out by a Mozilla contributor, and after digging, another developer found the original Microsoft license agreement. 'Amusingly enough, it's actually really permissive. Really the only part that's problematic is the agreement to "include the copyright notice ... on your product label and as a part of the sign-on message for your software product,"' wrote Kyle Huey on Mozilla's Bugzilla. Even so, others working on the bug said the code needed to be replaced with Mozilla's own."

Submission + - NVIDIA Tegra 2 Tablet Demos Unreal 3 At CES (hothardware.com)

MojoKid writes: "NVIDIA invited members of the press to a briefing at the Las Vegas Hilton so that the company's CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang, could unveil their latest highly integrated mobile processor. Known now as the Tegra 2, Huang spoke of the company's commitment to improving the mobile computing experience both functionally and visually. In this video of the briefing, Jen-Hsun holds an entire Tegra platform in the palm of his hand and the capabilities of the little platform are pretty impressive. In a tablet form factor, the machine is able to reproduce 1080p HD video at full frame rate. NVIDIA also claims the platform is capable of supporting up to 140 hours of music or 16 hours of HD video, on a single charge. Right around the 6:40 mark of the video Epic's Tim Sweeney comes up on stage and demos the Unreal 3 engine playing very fluidly. It was impressive to watch to be sure."
