Submission + - Shell CEO Gets Death Threat Because Gas Price

ferespo writes: "High gas prices may have a lot of people down, but apparently they also have someone feeling homicidal. According to CNN's November 15 "American Morning" Shell president John Hofmeister has gotten hate mail and even a death threat because of the price of gasoline. "Pretty brave that you decided to do this, you know you were heading out on tour, you didn't just get hate mail, but you actually received a death threat at one point?" asked co-host Kiran Chetry. "Well, you could call it that. It was a picture of me hanging from a high branch of a tall tree," said Hofmeister."

Submission + - Turing's unpublished algorithm for normal numbers (dc.uba.ar)

ferespo writes: A group of argentine scientists have given an almost full proof for an algorithm by Alan Turing, hand written by himself on the reverse of the sheets of his original paper about what would later be known as "Turing machines"

"In an unpublished manuscript, Alan Turing gave a computable construction to show that absolutely normal real numbers between 0 and 1 have Lebesgue measure 1; furthermore, he gave an algorithm for computing instances in this set. We complete his manuscript by giving full proofs and correcting minor errors. While doing this, we recreate Turing's ideas as accurately as possible. One of his original lemmas remained unproved, but we have replaced it with a weaker lemma that still allows us to maintain Turing's proof idea and obtain his result."

Submission + - Sex in the MRI (scienceblogs.com) 1

ferespo writes: The paper is all about visualizing the arrangement of organs during coitus. People have tried to figure out how the pieces all fit together internally using cadavers and their imagination, by using a speculum and poking around with their fingers, and by clever tools, like hollow glass tubes shaped like a penis. This paper tries something different: the investigators had people have sex in an MRI tube, and snapped a few pictures while they were at it.
