Comment Liquid mind or Peltor (Score 1) 561

3M / Peltor 90561 ear muffs. 30dbNRR. I use them at work to drown out the noisy voices. They work far better than anything else I have found. You might also check out Chuck Wild aka Liquid Mind. Very soothing ambient no-beat mood music. Beautiful and relaxing without being distracting. Pandora has a lot in their library so you can try before you buy. I know that music really helped me get through my EE studies. Good luck!

Comment Encrypted communications? (Score 1) 114

The Blackberry devices have been a favorite among lawyers and government workers for a long time because they were inherently more secure than similar portable email/telephony devices. Considering the Chinese government's position on encrypted devices and communications I seriously doubt the Blackberry as we know it would continue to exist. And even if it did...would you trust it?

If the reporting I saw can be trusted he had a counselor assigned to him personally the entire time he was in high school. He needed a lot of attention and they knew it and dealt with it. However when he left high school that support system disappeared. His mother (who reportedly was afraid to leave him alone) tried to keep him stable and attempted to integrate him with society but clearly it didn't work out.

Just in that report that I saw there were so many warning signs that this kid was a loose cannon and many people knew it. His mother was probably in denial hoping that she could make him turn a corner. She obviously needed help from a professional for him.

But back on topic, games aren't the problem for most people but for this kid who may not have been able to clearly define the boundaries between fantasy and real life they may have been a contributing factor. That said, we don't all need to be treated like we are mentally ill.

Maybe the video game rating system needs to put a reminder for parents that a violent game is not suitable for mentally ill or potentially unstable youths.

Check this out! It's a true 48G/SX with a much faster processor, USB/wifi/3G and unlimited memory! I have built up my copy with EQstack, ALG48 and so forth.

It's actually winning people over to the 48GX platform who never used it in the past. Since this one runs at blistering speed there's no downside.

Granted, the HP48 is circa 1993 but this app is exceptional for those of us who are familiar and comfortable with the platform. The app is actually built around the publicly available HP ROM for the 48 so all of the programs on hpcalc.org can be installed and run just like on the real calculator.

Comment China? Unlikely in the near term. (Score 1) 190

China depends too heavily on our economy. If they bring it crashing down they are crippling their biggest consumer and they will be facing huge internal problems as a result. If we get on our feet economically in the future then it's more likely.

Iran is much more of a loose cannon. It's hard to say, though, if they have the skillz required.

Well, aside from the obvious risks of everyone being beholden to the same OS if a security hole suddenly arises (but I'm sure that won't happen with Microsoft) there are reasons to build your skills with other OSs on your own.

Where I work I am already the Windows goto guy for light IT support because calling Bangalore is like going to the dentist only less productive.

However recently I changed groups and lo and behold, the designers use both Windows and Red Hat Enterprise. They already have a dedicated Linux support guy who is really good but it's almost a certainty that I'll be doing work in Linux before too long. The fact that I've been using it at home for years will really help me to adapt quickly.

So if the driverless car stops in the road for a perceived pedestrian that may-or-may not be crossing the street will it give me the electronic finger when I lean on the horn?

Seriously, I see a lot of people standing close to the edge of the sidewalk that I think might be going to cross. Usually it turns out they are just chatting and aren't going anywhere. I suspect there will be a lot of false positives resulting in the driverless car slowing or stopping in traffic for someone who isn't actually crossing the street.

I can also anticipate kids having fun with this by "faking out" the autonomous vehicles for a laugh.
