Comment Misplace Priority (Score 3, Insightful) 89

Perhaps the developed world should consider that when you can't feed yourself or your family, broadband is not really that high a priority. If you also factor in the illiteracy rate, it becomes even less of a priority. The things these countries need are much more basic and critical to survival. Clean safe water, renewable, self sustained sources of food. To hell with broadband, and I run an ISP.

Woman's Nude Pics End Up Online After Call To Tech Support 197

Tara Fitzgerald couldn't find the nude pictures she planned on sending to her boyfriend, but instead of just taking more, she decided to see if a Dell tech support call could fix her problem. Apparently the tech support guy found them. Unfortunately, he then put them up on a site called "bitchtara."

MS Design Lets You Put Batteries In Any Way You Want 453

jangel writes "While its strategy for mobile devices might be a mess, Microsoft has announced something we'll all benefit from. The company's patented design for battery contacts will allow users of portable devices — digital cameras, flashlights, remote controls, toys, you name it — to insert their batteries in any direction. Compatible with AA and AAA cells, among others, the 'InstaLoad' technology does not require special electronics or circuitry, the company claims."

Writer Peter Watts Sentenced; No Jail Time 299

shadowbearer writes "SF writer Peter Watts, a Canadian citizen, whose story we have read about before in these pages, was sentenced three days ago in a Port Huron, MI court. There's not a lot of detail in the story, and although he is still being treated like a terrorist (cannot enter or pass through the US, DNA samples) he was not ordered to do any time in jail, was freed, and has returned home to his family. The judge in the case was, I believe, as sympathetic as the legal system would allow him to be."

Comment maemo on Nokia N900 (Score 1) 544

I went with the Iphone to manage my networks. It became immediately necessary to hack the phone in order to get the applications / tools that I needed. After a day of config and cracking, I ended up with a phone that can bluetooth to an external Freedom folding keyboard (for real typing). I purchased the N900 running Maemo (linux debian based, I think). I've gotten most things working like I want on that, but have not been able to migrate completely yet, mostly due to a lack of time. I like the freedom the N900 provides as far as not being required to hack the phone. I'm still trying to get NX Client to run on it bug free. The only problem I have with the N900 is that it does not support 3G with ATT since it does have have the frequency capability.

Comment Spectrum and Technology (Score 1) 178

I own an ISP and am an electronics engineer. We provide both wireline and wireless internet access (WISP), as well as, telephone service (VOIP). Due to technology limitations and regulations on technology, we are limited to what speeds we can offer our customer base. The most helpful thing Government can do is free up additional spectrum that is currently not available to the wireless ISPs out there. However, when they have done that in the past (3.65 GHz band), they take input from the Big Players (ATT / other telcos) and make the equipment rules such that there is not a way to effectively use that spectrum. This squanders spectrum and prohibits innovation. I would like to see a band of frequencies as large as the 5.7-5.8 band that currently exists with the following requirements: 1. All operators will use electronically steered antennas thereby essentially making the entire network a Point to Point connection. This would greatly eliminate the tremendous interference we presently see. 2. Open up Ultra Wide Band for WISP use. This is the only way we will be able to provide the speeds that are going to be necessary in the near future. UWB could be limited to a specific band, or due to the electronic steering, opened up across all bands as the likely hood of interference would be greatly reduced.
