Submission + - Ask Slashdot: Using the iPad as sole computing device 4

cashman73 writes: Bad news. My mother's six year old desktop computer finally bit the dust due to and electrical surge. It's out-of-warranty, and not really worth fixing. Plus, I'm 2,500 miles and two time zones away, so I can't exactly troubleshoot things from here. I recently got an iPad (fourth generation with Retina), and even 80% of the things I do are done easier with the iPad! Plus, she really likes the size, convenience, portability, and the screen. Virtually everything she does is simple web browsing, email, light photo sharing but no heavy editing, and other simple tasks. We're thinking that using the iPad as her sole "computer" might be the best solution here. What are other Slashdotter's experiences with using the iPad or other tablets without a separate desktop computer connected to it?

Submission + - Forbes 2013 career list flamed by university professors (forbes.com)

An anonymous reader writes: The Forbes list of "least stressful jobs" for 2013 is headlined by... university professors. This comes at a time in which the academic community has been featured on controversies about 100-hour week work journeys, doctors live on food stamps, tenured staff is laid off large science institutions, and the National Science Foundation suffers severe budget cuts, besides the well known (and sometimes publicized) politics of publish or perish. The Forbes reporter has received abundant feedback and published a shy, foot-note "addendum"; however, their cited source, CareerCast (which does not map to any recognizable career journalist, but rather to a Sports writer), does not seem to have had the same luck. The comments of the Forbes reporter on the existence of a Summer break for graduates ("I am curious whether professors work that hard over the summer") are particularly noteworthy.

Comment Re:Cum Laude Degree? (Score 1) 189

It would have been nice if Samantha Grossman's "cum laude degree" taught her something about chronological order. Because her resume certainly doesn't display that. Add in the fact that she's advertising that she's a member of a social sorority and has a "fun fact" of "having the most social media profiles", and her resume would go straight into my circular file,. . .

Comment 6 months? (Score 4, Insightful) 311

I wouldn't worry about finding specific apps that are "safe" for a 6-month old. At that age, no parent should even consider letting their child use an Internet-connected device unsupervised. So, if yo show the child something on the web browser, or another app, you should know specifically what you're looking at and should be 100% comfortable with the material.

Comment What's Bing? (Score 1) 153

I didn't know Bing was a map application. I thought Bing was that guy that was tap dancing with Danny F**king Kaye on the hap-hap-happiest Christmas ever with those jolly bunch of a**holes at the Griswold's? :-)

Comment Economy (Score 1) 219

I disagree that China will be the world's largest economy. First of all, let's not neglect India. Secondly, what we're seeing today is an equilibrium effect taking place, as China and India make gains to catch up and Europe and North America give a little. It will all eventually settle, and we'll have three dominant world economies: Asia, Europe, and the Americas (North and South).

Comment Is this news? (Score -1, Flamebait) 1163

This doesn't even meet the broad definition of news , much less news for nerds . Slashdot, you're disappointing me. All this means is that a bunch of random retards in predominantly southern states have figured out how to create an online petition on the White House website and are crapflooding them. Even the GNAA is disappointed at this. Wake me if these nutjobs manage to convince a Governor or State Legislature to draft articles of secession.
