A few years ago, my local utility company encouraged residents to switch to natural gas, citing its low cost and clean energy. They even offered to install a free gas line from the street to my home, which I accepted. However, it took me a few years to update my oil boiler to a gas one, which I did in 2020 when gas was much cheaper. The following year, I installed a mini-split system for air conditioning, but I was advised not to purchase the low-temperature model since I already had a gas boiler for heating.
However, with the recent surge in gas prices, I now rely mostly on the mini-split system for heating, which is not as comfortable and struggles to operate below 30F (since it is not the low-temperature model). As a homeowner, it is frustrating to have spent money on a gas system that is no longer cost-effective, and I that I should have gone with my gut and purchased the low-temp mini-split model.
I anticipate that as more people switch to mini-split systems, the increased demand on the electricity grid during winter will result in higher electricity prices, negating any cost savings.
