Comment CoD is the carrot. (Score 1) 18

It's likely that CoD will generate more revenue by being available on multiple platforms. CoD is currently the popular franchise of discussion, but it's not the only one Microsoft will acquire. More than likely, CoD will be sacrificed by Microsoft to make the other acquired IPs become console exclusives.

300 percent is marketing manipulation, but it's technically not wrong.. Electric heaters are 100% efficient because all of the energy used is converted to usable heat. With a gas unit, some of the heat is lost through the flue, so the percentages are typically less than 100. With electric, you get 3.412 BTU per watt of energy used. When the temperatures are mild, you can get 10-12 BTU per watt with a heat pump, so that's why they claim "300%".

Comment Just a few years ago. (Score 1) 215

A few years ago, my local utility company encouraged residents to switch to natural gas, citing its low cost and clean energy. They even offered to install a free gas line from the street to my home, which I accepted. However, it took me a few years to update my oil boiler to a gas one, which I did in 2020 when gas was much cheaper. The following year, I installed a mini-split system for air conditioning, but I was advised not to purchase the low-temperature model since I already had a gas boiler for heating. However, with the recent surge in gas prices, I now rely mostly on the mini-split system for heating, which is not as comfortable and struggles to operate below 30F (since it is not the low-temperature model). As a homeowner, it is frustrating to have spent money on a gas system that is no longer cost-effective, and I that I should have gone with my gut and purchased the low-temp mini-split model. I anticipate that as more people switch to mini-split systems, the increased demand on the electricity grid during winter will result in higher electricity prices, negating any cost savings.

Sounds intentional. Release an inferior version of the product on a rival system to impress the regulators, but leave the only version worth playing on their own hardware. Since the Switch is under-powered (compared to the Xbox consoles) they can get around the accusation of intentionally making an inferior product by claiming there are hardware limitations that don't allow the same experience.

Comment The parental filter is worse than you think. (Score 5, Interesting) 48

As a parent, there are some shows I want to block because I find them insipid, but my children are attracted to the bright characters and will ask for the show if they see it in the selection. The problem with the Netflix filter is that it only blocks one specific show and not any keywords. Sometimes we'll block a show, then a new season of that show is released, but Netflix adds a subtitle to the original name, so it's treated as a new show and it bypasses the previous filter. There are a lot of shows with about 5+ seasons or holiday themes that are all listed as a new shows, so every time a new one is released, I have to go back into the settings and block something else. Currently, the kids don't watch any TV without me present, so I can filter the content as needed, but it's annoying to still see content that I'm actively trying to block.

I'm not a football fan. Years ago I would turn on the Superbowl in the background and lookup from my computer to watch the commercials. However, since the popularity of Youtube, I can literally just wait until afterwards and watch all of the ads in one go. Though, even now I don't bother with that anymore unless someone tells me there was a really good ad worth watching.
