Google

Submission + - Google documents crashed!

Jesse Barksdale writes: I was working on Google documents at about 5:35 EST and all of the sudden, the entire website crashed! I couldn't save my documents, and once I left a document, couldn't open any of them either. A minute later, I was getting a 404 error just trying to access the Google documents site. A few minutes later the site was back up. At first documents were read-only, while I suppose they fixed whatever error had crashed the site. I thought this could be news worthy because 100 percent of the time I support Google and what I think is a great push towards storing documents in a centralized location, to be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection. But, in a moment like that, it reminds me of the fear of not having complete control over documents that are pretty vital to my life. Sure, personal computers crash and hard drives fry, but at least it's sitting in my room where I can be the one to destroy it.

Submission + - Facebook launches library to ease PHP embedding bl (computerworlduk.com)

Christiangrays writes: "Facebook engineers have made it easier for developers to embed PHP by developing a PHPEmbed library.

"The library is just a more accessible and simplified application programming interface (API) built on top of the PHP Server API (SAPI). The library is so useful, we decided to share it with the world," writes Facebook engineer Andrew 'Boz' Bosworth.

Bosworth said that the PHP programming language has solidified itself as the language of choice for many top Internet properties, including Facebook, as it is easy to use and integrates well with Apache, Memcache, and MySQL.

Submission + - X-Wing Rocket Launches, Disintegrates Mid-Air (gizmodo.com) 2

An anonymous reader writes: Remember the 21-foot X-Wing with four rocket engines? It launched yesterday from Plaster City and here's the video showing what many thought inevitable: total destruction in mid-air. From the post: "I can only say two things. The first is: absolutely amazing. And the second: poor Porkins." Apparently Gizmodo is going to publish an exclusive feature with full video and interviews with the Rebel engineers soon.

Logfiles Made Interesting with glTail 131

Fudgie writes "My boss claimed it was pretty much impossible to create an entertaining way to visualize server traffic and events in a short time frame, so of course I had to prove him wrong. A weekend of neglecting my family produced a small ruby program which connects to your servers via SSH, grabs and parses data from Apaches access log and Ruby on Rails production log, and displays your traffic and statistics in real-time using a simple OpenGL interface (tested under Linux and Mac OS/X). It's a bit hard to explain over text, so please have a look at fudgie.org for an example movie, and more information."

Submission + - Amiga clone OS now 64-bit (blogspot.com)

downix writes: "The AROS Project, an attempt to create an open-source API-compatible clone of the Amiga's operating system has migrated to new, uncharted territory today, becoming officially the first Amiga-derived operating system to run at a full 64-bits. After seeing the almost laughable progress of the actual OS, witnessing the progress under a peer-reviewed and open-sourced from-scratch reimplimentation is a breath of fresh air. While still incomplete, AROS has had remarkable progress, and shows promise for the future."
