Submission + - SPAM: Berners-Lee warns against mobile "walled garde

alphadogg writes: Web creator Tim Berners-Lee Wednesday gave a talk titled "Escaping the Walled Garden: Growing the Mobile Web with Open Standards." His message: "The Web is an open platform on which you build other things. That's how you get this innovation. The Web is universal: you can run it on any hardware, on any operating system, it can be used by people of different languages...It's a sandbox where people can [play and] exercise their creativity. It's very important to keep the Web universal as we merge the Internet with mobile. "The "walled garden" is the metaphor that describes today's cable TV and cellular data networks, where subscribers can only use devices authorized by the carrier, and can only access content and services authorized by the carrier.

Submission + - NeuroKernel Advanced Internet Computing Platform (neurodna.com)

NeuroKernel writes: "NeuroKernel is the first platform ever made which uses Java and Browser's native technologies together with no extra plug-in or signed component.

Advanced Browser Based User Interface System;

NeuroKernel can be used via both internet and intranet. It requires only a Web browser with or without a Java plug-in. Our advanced technology can run your applications on both client (CUIP Technology) or server (JUIP Technology) keeping the look and feel and responsiveness of the entire interface same. Rendering engine of the platform is a true master piece, its tight architecture and performance makes it an ideal application development environment even for embedded systems.

Entire user interface is rendered using native browser technologies (DHTML, HTML, JavaScript, XMLHttpRequest, Java live-connect, Canvas and many others) plus Java plugin's low level graphic area can be used for high performance interactive graphics when needed. When the desktop and applications run at server, NeuroKernel switches to our advanced AJAX based JUIP technology, but gives access to browser based canvas support from SDK to draw complex graphics which is also available to our Java live-connect based CUIP technology.

Network Operating System;

NeuroKernel is a fully capable network operating environment. It can manage and run multiple tasks, can create inter client communication ports and manage user files from a well designed windowing environment. All the modules which make the NeuroKernel desktop were written using NeuroKernel's very own Java based SDK which makes it self hosting. Writing a very complex desktop gave us the opportunity to test and stabilize complex processes and programming models of NeuroKernel architecture. It also helped us to make a very programmer friendly and practical to code with Software Development Kit .

NeuroKernel comes with an extension component architecture which we used and tested on NeuroKernel desktop; however, the extension component interface is not finalized. Until we finalize the extension component interface, we will release backward compatible extension component libraries, plus we will take orders for custom extensions. NeuroKernel SDK has all the bells and whistles to create a complex custom component, so going through the low level extension mechanism in most part is not very necessary.

NeuroKernel creates an incredible ecosystem in between J2EE, Java plugin and Browser's own native technologies. They all work together in a very well tuned distributed architecture. This one of a kind Network Computing Platform brings extraordinary flexibility to the industry in many fronts.

Submission + - A small victory for the EFF: EFF, Telcos and NSA (arstechnica.com)

Krishna Dagli writes: "Well this is a good news for the EFF, but will the case move on to discovery? Will telcos cooperate for their own benefit?

From the article link:
"In a victory for the EFF, Judge Vaughn Walker ruled today that AT&T, Verizon, Cingular (now part of AT&T), Sprint, and BellSouth (also part of AT&T now) must all maintain any data or papers related to the NSA spying case that Walker is overseeing in California. The EFF had requested the ruling out of concern that documents would be destroyed as part of routine data deletion practices before the case could even progress to discovery.""

Submission + - New Skilled Games Site with Chat and More (uvme.biz)

Bakerboy58uvme writes: "uVme is a fast-moving and unique business that combines three of the most exciting phenomena on the internet: ONLINE GAMES, SOCIAL NETWORKING WITH INSTANT LIVE COMMUNICATION, and Social Marketing. This market is so powerful, it's growing four times faster than the Internet. It's NEW, VIBRANT, DYNAMIC, and above all else, it's FUN. The online games business, although already massive, is extra special right now because of the timing. Timing is critical in business, and this market is emerging as the next evolutionary step in online entertainment. Go To: http://www.uvme.biz/fbona What are casual games of skill? Casual games are familiar, fun pastimes such as: Board games like draughts, backgammon Sports games like pool, golf and basketball Puzzle games like jigsaws and word games These are played online in a tournament format, with each player paying a cash entry fee to play, and with a cash or merchandise prize going to the winner or winners of the tournament. Skill-based games are named accordingly because the outcome of each competition is based on the players' ability and performance, with any elements of luck eliminated. This is critical, in order to be legal and avoid falling under anti-gambling statutes. People like to play these games on their computers for a fun challenge. Playing them online against someone else adds an extra social, competitive element; and playing for cash prizes between USD$1 and $1,000 upwards makes them even more exciting and rewarding! What does all of this mean? It means that online games are where the money is. People are willing to pay to play, and they are doing it already. Interesting fact? ...It's much more than that. Challenging a friend to a game, "u V me", IS YOUR BUSINESS. The more fun people have, the bigger your profit. You don't have to worry about stocks, overheads, selling, in fact, we've knocked down every barrier and erased every stigma attached, replacing it only with simplicity, fun, and status. So WIN or LOSE, you will always be a winner!"

Submission + - Students Face Expulsion Following Antiwar Sit-In (indymedia.org)

An anonymous reader writes: Over 70 students participated in a sit-in against the Iraq War on Thursday, November 1st at Morton West High School in Berwyn, IL. Dozens of students gathered quietly in the lunchroom and refused to leave. Administrators and police became involved immediately and locked down the school for a half hour after class ended. Those who went home or left before the protest ended at the final bell, received 3-5 days suspension. All others, an estimated 37 received 10 days suspension and expulsion papers. The Superintendent stated those who are seventeen will also face police charges. Parents are frantically trying to spare their child's expulsion. The protest came on the heels of a recent incident, when a student reported hearing that another student had a gun on campus. The school was not locked down.

Submission + - The World's Ugliest Website For Sale On eBay (youreapoorloser.com)

Da Man writes: "The website YoureAPoorLoser.com has put itself up for sale on the auction Web site eBay, declaring itself as "The Ugliest Website In The World". On Tuesday, the site was listed on eBay as a 10 day auction, with bidding starting at just $1. Even though the auction may have started as a joke by it's owner, at the end of the first day, hundreds of queries already have been logged onto the listing and there have even been bids placed by eBay users who are interested in buying the site. It's creator wrote in his eBay entry, "Notice: This is the ugliest website in the world. But it's still on track to make more money then you!" The creator of the auction also goes on to explain that the site is a parody, based on a variety of well-known websites that promote multi-million dollar "get rich quick" schemes — which has taken the Internet by storm over the past few years."

Submission + - Splashtop Promises to Lower Boot Load Times (osweekly.com)

toms writes: "OSWeekly.com reviews Splashtop that promises to decrease boot load times by giving users an instant access to their core applications without ever booting into the OS. The article continues: "With that said, the big question is, would I buy it? Actually, despite them demonstrating to me a clear 'need' of what this is doing for me besides saving me a minute of time, yes, I would. The reason why I would do this is because of what this could potentially grow into. I think the idea has a lot of value. It just needs to find a clear direction that does not assume that the world runs an OS that takes three minutes to boot into."

You obviously will be the judge of this in the end. One thing that IS very different in our situation is that Saul's not the household name (yet!) that Radiohead is, and that means we need your support on this more than ever."
