The answer is called Maemo - the next generation Nokia OS based on debian Linux. I've a Nokia N900 and the most recent update (3 days ago) seems to have solved all the issues I had noticed in the past.

In the recent update of n900:
- VOIP is still not working correctly
- After the update, the phone sends an SMS to Nokia with your phone number, IMEI and network operator data
So no, I am not happy with it.

One of the features of the new firmware is that after the update it sends an SMS to Nokia with the details about the IMEI, network and phone number. There is no easy way to turn this feature off.

Submission + - Developer obsession with code names, 114 of them. (pingdom.com)

antdude writes: Pingdom reports the developer obsession with code names with 114 interesting examples:

"Code names have been around for a long time. Remember the Manhattan project in the 1940s? That turned out to be the atomic bomb. Thankfully, not all code names hide such sinister projects.

Code names can be about secrecy, but when it comes to software development, it’s usually not so much about secrecy as it is about the convenience of having a name for a specific version of a software. It can be very practical to have a unique identifier for a project to get everyone on the same page and avoid confusion.

And we want to name our darlings, don't we?

So what kind of code names are developers out there coming up with? Here is a collection of code names for software products from companies..."

Submission + - Firefox still growing at 2.5x Chrome (gigaom.com)

ruphus13 writes: Rumors of the death of Firefox have been greatly exaggerated. There was rife speculation that Chrome would supersede Firefox. However, at least as of now, Firefox seems to be holding its own, and the rate of growth vis-a-vis Chrome doesn't seem to have abated. From the article, "How bad are things at Mozilla? Not as bad as one would think. In a recent blog post, Mozilla’s Aza Dotzler pointed out that for every Chrome downloader, there are 2.5 folks who download Firefox. “Firefox gained just over 100 million users in the same period that Chrome gained just over 40 million users,” he wrote...Given that the holiday season has started in many parts of the world, with schools and universities shutting down, we might be seeing a slump in Firefox usage and downloads. Firefox, according to NetMarketShare, is still showing growth on a month-to-month basis — from June 2009 (22.43 percent) to April 2010 (24.59 percent), it increased its market share by 2.16 percent. That along with the 100 million-plus daily active installations (Mozilla claims it has 400 million users), shows that Firefox is far from having a real moment of crisis. Not only does it have time to course-correct and respond to all its critics, it also has time to regain momentum."

Submission + - Nvidia Removes Hybrid PhysX Blockage (ngohq.com)

An anonymous reader writes: A few months ago, Nvidia disabled the PhysX technology (GPU and PPU) anytime a Non-Nvidia GPU is present in the system (even IGPs), now it seems that Nvidia has removed the blockage in the recent 257.15 GeForce drivers. However, it is still a mystery for us if it was done intentionally or perheps it is just a bug.

Submission + - Oil Spill Project Official Rushed Completion (npr.org)

messdog writes: NPR is reporting that a BP official was in a hurry to finish the Deepwater Horizon rig's job at the site of the huge oil spill and caused the Transocean employees running the rig to take shortcuts that resulted in the spill.

So next time your project manager tries to shortcut the end of a project, you can tell him that's how they made the largest oil spill in the US.

Exactly, it doesn't even make logical sense: How the heck do you have an Asynchronous Transfer Mode "Machine"?

You put in the card, enter pin and then the machine releases the money at some later time.
