"hate speech" is not illegal in the US and it is protected by the first amendment, for better or worse. the bottom line is, the first amendment exists to permit the free exchange of ALL ideas, even ones you don't personally agree with. that is the point.
there's no need to codify protection of ideas the majority agree with.
when social media platforms BECOME the "town square" then they *should* fall under that purview. But social media apps are run by private companies, private companies are not required to allow freedom of speech and can censor whatever they want, or allow whatever they want (within the limits of the law)
so do you want freedom of speech, or do you want freedom of speech only in as much as you agree with that speech?
