Comment The problem with hybrid (Score 1) 129

The problem with hybrid that I've experienced is that not everyone I would ordinarily collaborate with is in the office at the same time, so we still work as if we are remote while in the office -- meeting over WebEx, communicating via Microsoft Teams chats and calls, etc. This is possibly the least efficient way to work, as it still requires people to commute some of the time, but affords almost none of the purported benefits of getting people into the office part time. It's insane.

My biggest complaint about Airbnb is that these properties all charge cleaning fees, yet every one of them leaves instructions on how YOU must clean the property before you leave. This is absurd, and would never fly at a proper hotel (which never charges an additional cleaning fee, in my experience). For this reason I only very rarely use Airbnb.

Code, low-code, no-code - irrelevant. Citizen developers are not going to build the software that runs business, because that software needs to work correctly, meet requirements, and scale. Now theyâ(TM)re developers, and you need to hire new people to fill the roles they were doing as citizens. Or, maybe, youâ(TM)ll just hire developers.

You assume incorrectly. I have been filing taxes for 24 years, and for most of those years I have done it myself.

GOP politicians may say that they want tax filing to be easier or cheaper. However, they work behind the scenes to ensure that it never happens. And you have correctly pointed to a perfect example of this phenomenon. The GOP said that they would make tax filing simpler and cheaper if you just supported their huge tax break for the wealthy and corporations. They gave them their huge tax break, but did nothing on the postcard. Raising the standard deduction arguably made filing simpler, if you are the kind of person who takes the standard deduction without first totaling your eligible deductions to see which is greater. I think most middle class Americans do not fall into that category, as we typically have many eligible deductions and it would not be prudent to assume the standard deduction is greater than itemized without verification.

If you had done your research, like, at all, you would have learned about Grover Norquist, his "Taxpayer Protection Pledge" that nearly all GOP candidates take, and "Americans for Tax Reform." The ATR opposes all efforts to make tax filing cheaper, simpler, or more automated.

But conservative anti-tax activists and Republicans in Congress not only disagree with their beloved Gipper, they want to kill return-free filing before it ever becomes a reality. Grover Norquist’s Americans for Tax Reform and others argue that such a system would be coercive; “If you’re a typical American and you get this packet from the I.R.S. that says, ‘Here’s what we’ve determined your liability is,’ no one is going to challenge it,” ATR’s Ryan Ellis told Manjoo.

The issue with Linux on the desktop is that the experience is not at all cohesive. Once you scratch the surface, you find yourself in a sea of applications with obscure names, inconsistent UX/UX, and varying levels of functionality. Elementary OS really shines here as they are working to make the desktop experience more cohesive with a consistent set of applications to cover the users basic needs. The apps have a consistent look and feel, consistent design language. They also have an App Store with curated apps that feel like they belong on the ElementaryOS desktop.

The point is not that Windows or Mac OSX has better bluetooth functionality. The point is that a major release of a desktop OS whose above-the-fold sales pitch is improved bluetooth functionality is clearly not competing with Windows or Mac OS. Those OS's bring bring major UX improvements and new first-party software with major releases.

I use Linux on the server, where it excels. I have numerous software applications running on hosted Linux servers, applications running in Azure cloud running on Linux ASE's, and a couple applications running in a Kubernetes cluster that I manage. In addition, I have a homelab composed of several Proxmox hosts running a number of Ubuntu Server VM's. I do not use Linux for the desktop because every time I have tried, it has always been a more painful experience than using Windows for my primary use cases: .NET development, and gaming. And when I need to do some development for iOS, I keep a Mac Mini around, but its usage is limited exclusively to performing builds and deployments into the App Store

And what FUD? Compare Mint's announcement to an OSX release announcement and you'll see what I mean. Mint releases are still focused on basic, table-stakes functionality like Bluetooth, thumbnails, and right-click context menus.
