It's because ad supported doesn't actually work for any decent-sized service.

"Traditionnal" web ads that users have to click for them to generate revenue for the site may not work, but I think advertisers are (or will be) paying good money for one of Spotify's audio ads (in between songs, just like on radio). And they are more annoying than blockable text/image/flash ads, so they are a "better" insentive for the user to suscribe to the service (or to switch service, but if they manage to stay ahead of the competition most users will pay or continue waiting through the ads I guess).

Well by "just works" I mean "you only have to install the app and the correct driver if you don't have it already, no configuration or troubleshooting are necessary" :

pacman -S yaourt
yaourt -S nvidia-beta
pacman -S xbmc
xbmc

Done. That's a bit complicated because I was using beta-quality software so I had to install it from the community repos (which are fantastic on Arch BTW). Now that the stable nvidia driver supports VDPAU, it becomes :

pacman -S nvidia xbmc
xbmc

That's what I call Just Works (assuming you know how to use your system of course). If you know a simpler way to install a program and run it let me know :)

Comment Re:Hardware acceleration (Score 1) 419

It should Just Work TM, provided you're using a recent proprietary nvidia driver (some weeks ago you had to use the betas, but I think the latest official release supports VDPAU), and that the apps you're using are compiled with VDPAU support. On Arch Linux, I just had to install the latest beta nvidia driver and XBMC 9.04, and it worked.

Well that doesn't really matter as the linux folks who would be afraid to try and compile an app will get it via their distro package manager, and it's almost certain that distros like ubuntu will compile in video acceleration support. The others will have the choice, and that's what OSS's all about :)

Go ask any of the artists/bands you namedropped what they think of MJ's music. I'm sure they'll all tell you he was a great artist, especially the ones that recorded songs with him (Slash for example, and Eddie Van Halen whom you surely forgot ; he also recorded a couple of unreleased songs with Freddy Mercury).

Comparing Michael Jackson to the Jonas Fucking Brothers is ignorant at best.

Sometimes it's just that IT won't bother with other OS's. I develop J2EE apps, the tools I use all work under Linux (as well as or better than under Windows), and all the corporate applications are web-based or are simple enough to run under wine or at least a VM.

But still I'm forced to use Windows XP with all its niceties like the 5-10mn boot time (because of all the security tools like Symantec AV and this awful ACL daemon), the retarded cmd.exe, the ancient WM,... And don't get me started on JasperReports, which outputs wildly different PDFs according to the OS (our production servers run Linux)...

Second, had the first AC asked a question in an intelligent, humble and polite manner I'm sure he would have got a more informative answer. His post makes him look dumb, fool mouthed and biaised against Linux (in short, a typical /. troll), so I'll have to agree with Shadow-isoHunt's diagnostic ^^

So, problem solved. Apple needs to get out of the iPhone app approving business.

Too complicated. It's easier sitting on your ass while the web/iphone/Xbox babysits your children and then loudly complaining when they see something you didn't want them to.
