Comment subverts... (Score 2) 30

The word you're looking for is "subverts".

Apple *subverts* US Government's Push for a National Right-to-Repair Bill.

Sure, you'll get your "right to repair" law, in a form that gives Apple exactly what they want and changes nothing for the rest of you.

In theory, regular people (as demonstrated by enthusiasts with tons of time on their hands) will be able to replace components.
And there will be a youtube video to prove it. Maybe two.

But you're never going to stop by Bubba & Earl's iphone repair and live bait shop and get your iphone screen replaced for the actual cost to produce a spare screen.

Comment it's the pressure gradient across the membrane tha (Score 1) 135

Putting your desalination plan in the bottom of the ocean increases the pressure on both sides of the membrane. The only difference is that the pump at the bottom of the ocean costs a lot more and needs much longer cables.

This is another pseudoscience investor scam.

Besides everybody knows the only way to separate randomly moving particles with zero energy input is Maxwell's demon.

Heh.... I once worked in a engineering department with an intern program.
So, we had prospective engineers 19-20 years old wanting to learn or at least try out the trade.

One intern came from a very sheltered background in rural MIssissippi and absolutely refused to refer to connectors as "male" and "female".
Because when you connect them, what are they doing !?
They were to be called "type A" and "type B".

Our young intern was sincere about this so we called them "type A" and "type B".
Still not sure whether type A or type B was the innie or the outie.

Comment My first mod was a silent switch on a game (Score 1) 66

Many years ago, my friends and I had electronic football games.
There was one from Mattel and another from Coleco. The Coleco was better because the QB could make moves on it they couldn't on the Mattel.
The sound came from a piezo disc. I added a sound switch to my and my friends games so we could play them in class without the faculty hearing it.

Apparently you can still buy them, but they cost a hundred bucks (WTF??). And they now have a sound button from the factory.

Comment Re: I guess it takes a college degree (Score 1) 404

Yep. People get drunk and screw *all the time*, so "If two people are really wasted and have sex, was there a rape?" is a perfectly valid question.
IANAL.
The naive understanding is that when drunk or high there is no consent and sex without consent is rape. Seems pretty straightforward.
Note some jurisdictions require people to say "yes" for sex to not be rape; others require them to say "no" for it to be rape.

The resolution to the scenario involves some rules that most people are not willing to say out loud.
I'm not saying this is how things should be--only that in most conversations with people I have found this is how a lot of people think:
1. If person "a" did *exactly* the same thing they are accusing person "b" of doing, then person "a" guilt cancels person "b" guilt.
2. Men are villains.
3. Women are victims.

Comment Re: I guess it takes a college degree (Score 1) 404

Many years ago when I attended college somebody put up wanted style posters with photographs of arbitrary male-presenting students and a caption that read "potential rapist".

Which was technically true, so not libelous. The basis was that the law at the time defined rape as penile penetration of a non-consenting victim. Therefore all people with penises and only people with penises could potentially commit the crime.

Note at that time the general view was that males are the ones with penises.

The posters were taken down after a day or so, never to reappear.
