Submission + - How to handle massive email loss?

sherriw writes: How do you recover from a massive loss of old emails?

My growing wariness of Gmail and the fact that they archive your email forever prompted me to start moving away from Gmail to my own self-hosted webmail. So I started by deleting all my gmail that was older than 2006. But I typed 2008 by mistake, went blindly ahead and POOF all my gmail messages gone. Yes, I even emptied my trash.

My begging for help email to the Gmail support center has not been answered yet. So I'm faced with this permanent loss. How do you mentally handle the loss of thousands of emails, many of them part of ongoing "things to do" lists, and others with very important reference information and business related discussions? Email that ranks a 10 on the importance and relevance to my life scale. And yes... I will be using my own email accounts and backing it up on my PC from now on (my PC of course has backups), shame on me.

Does anyone have their own email or data loss horror stories?

Submission + - Word 2007 unacceptable for science journals

G.Bognar writes: Both Nature and Science Magazine have announced that they will not accept submissions with Word 2007. Apparently, Word 2007 introduced incompatibilities which make it unusable for these journals. One could detect bafflement and a bit of anger on the Instructions for authors pages of Science Magazine and Nature.

Submission + - Putin Threatens US Missile Bases in Europe (forbes.com)

Melugo writes: "Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that U.S. plans to build a missile defense system in Eastern Europe would force Moscow to target its weapons against Europe. "If the American nuclear potential grows in European territory, we have to give ourselves new targets in Europe," Putin said, according to Corriere. "It is up to our military to define these targets, in addition to defining the choice between ballistic and cruise missiles." It feels like the Cold War all over again. See the rest of the article at: Forbes or a comment on it at alittlebitoffreedom.blogspot.com."

Submission + - Setting Up a small linux cluster

Davemania writes: I am working for a research group that requires to do a large amount of data analysis (each of these files could be up to 1 gig in size). We're planning on buying up to 10 pc with linux on them to do these scientific processing (matlab, etc ) but what would be the best configuration for these 10 linux boxes ? Preferably, we would like to maintain all the data on one server and send it out to the Linux box for processing automatically. What approach would be the best, clustering ? OpenMosix, Rock Cluster ? or just simply drop files into the share folder and remote desktop in ?

Submission + - Shuttle Workers Vote to Strike (orlandosentinel.com)

stoolpigeon writes: "A union representing 570 space shuttle program workers at the Kennedy Space Center voted to strike Saturday, less than a week before the planned launch of the shuttle Atlantis. The International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers, which represents the United Space Alliance employees, rejected the company's contract offer Saturday morning, Florida Today reported. The union could strike as early as June 9, a day after NASA officials plan to launch Atlantis. It was unclear Saturday whether the vote to strike could affect the launch schedule."

Submission + - Alternatives to SF.net's CompileFarm?

cronie writes: Not long ago, SourceForge.net announced it shuts down the Compile Farm — a collection of computers running wide variety of OSes, available for compiling and testing open-source projects. SF.net states their resources "are best used at this time in improving other parts" of the service. I seriously consider this sad news for the OSS community, because portability is one of the strengths of OSS, and not many of us, developers, have such variety of platforms in our possession to compile and test our software on. As a consequence, I expect many projects dropping support for some of the platforms they simply don't have access to. Are there any sound alternatives with at least some popular OS/hardware combinations? Any plans to create one? (Perhaps Google or IBM might come up with something?)
