Apple Admits to Occasional Excessive Work Hours 362

rev_media writes "After Apple's release of a report on the labor conditions in their Chinese factories, many took issue with the deliberately vague wording used in the statement. The BBC is now reporting that Apple has admitted to 'excessive' working hours in some locations, and they would be ensuring that a 'normal' 60-hour work week will be adhered to from now on." From that article: "'We found no instances of forced overtime and employees confirmed in interviews that they could decline overtime requests without penalty,' said Apple in a statement. The firm said there were 'overtime limit exceptions in unusual circumstances' and that it supported a healthy work-life balance. But it did not specify what the triggers for 'unusual circumstances' were and what upper limit it set on working hours. Mr Kuczkiewicz said Apple had not asked workers what they preferred - a decent wage or minimum wage and overtime."

Dangerous Apple Power Adapters? 240

An anonymous reader writes "Even with all these exploding Dell notebooks and other notebook safety problems, Apple has seemed relatively immune. Every once in a while, some odd thing came along, but it seemed like relatively calm waters. Not anymore — Apple's notebook power adapters appear to be the source of some serious safety concerns. Every iBook and PowerBook user should read this and keep a close eye on their adapter — the adapters suffer from very poor design including wires that seem prone to short out and burn and zero short circuit protection."

Will OSX Build In Torrenting? 285

Cjattwood writes "Mac OS rumors has an article describing a possible implementation of a Bittorrent client into Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard", including a unique sharing reward system where the user can share bandwidth and get rewards, such as credit in the iTunes store."

Macs May No Longer Be Immune to Viruses 391

Bill writes "MSNBC reports that the combination of Apple's growing market share and their recent switch to x86 processors has made Mac OS X a new target for viruses. Unfortunately, it seems that many Mac users are in denial. '[Computer security expert Tom] Ferris said he warned Apple of the vulnerabilities in January and February and that the company has yet to patch the holes, prompting him to compare the Cupertino-based computer maker to Microsoft three years ago, when the world's largest software company was criticized for being slow to respond to weaknesses in its products.'"

Nice Performance Tuning For UNIX 206

Professor writes "Be 'nice' to your computers and examine some general guidelines for tuning server performance. A computer is like an employee who does tasks for you -- it's a good idea to keep from overburdening them. Keep this from happening by using the UNIX 'nice' command."

PC Games Go To Boot Camp 90

1up has taken several of the more popular recent PC titles to Apple Boot Camp, and report back on how they handle the MacBook Pro hardware. From the article: "With all settings on medium, F.E.A.R. is absolutely playable. Again, none of the silky-smooth 60 fps that hardware freaks clamor for, but it looks good and plays well even with tons of characters onscreen. Annoyingly, F.E.A.R. offers a really pitiful selection of resolutions, all of which are constrained to the old-fashioned 4:3 aspect ratio -- meaning that play on the MacBook's widescreen is stretched, and kind of ugly. That's not a hardware issue so much as limited programming, and presumably anyone with a widescreen PC is in the same pickle."

Journal Journal: Rogers 60 GB cap starts today for me

As of today the Rogers 61440 MB monthly transfer limit comes into effect.

Last month by trying really hard I managed to get my combined upload/download to 64,421 MB just to see how likely it would be. To be fair, Darryl moved out on Feb. 28, and I had gotten him addicted to his torrents, but I tried to pick up the slack with heavy uploading (usually capped at 35 kB/Sec) after he left.

Journal Journal: Did I mod this wrong?

I moderated this comment "redundant".

I did it because of this comment in the same article.

Unfortunately in M2 it was said that my moderation was unfair.

Looked to me like the poster accidentally posted twice -- once as html and the other as pure text.

Journal Journal: Great source of chill music: Soma FM

Well I have been listening to a number of their stations for a while thanks to the iTunes radio, but SomaFM hosts more than I knew about, and so far I think they're all that great kind of stuff you want to come home and chill to.

Any other suggestions for this type of "chill-out" (ambient, trip-hop, acid jazz, idm etc.) station are welcome!

Journal Journal: Messages

Noticing that metamoderation results no longer seem to appear in my (web-based) messages. Bug?

Journal Journal: Effects of negative M2?

I have probably moderated about 100 comments in my Slashdot career so far, and as of today, two have been marked as "unfair" in meta-moderation.

How does this affect my eligibility to moderate in the future? I've checked the FAQ pages and nothing seems to address this.

Journal Journal: Afterglow web site

Really badly need pics from Om, Teknival and WEMF for the Afterglow web site. Ethan sent me some and they're a little limited. Post a reply to this if you have any, and include a URL I can scoop 'em from.
