Comment Re:Deutsches Museum at Munich (Score 1) 435

Another vote for Deutsches Museum. Awesome place - easily a two day trip by itself.

I have a photo of me standing inside the core of a CRAY-1, and another standing next to the operator console of a System 360.

Check their operating times before going -- if I recall correctly, they tend to close on religious holidays (ehh, Bavaria!)

I used to write software that ran on equipment that had to pass UL 1069 (Nurse Call equipment). One of the tests is a temperature test -- the server had to operate normally at elevated temperatures. This was to simulate a server forgotten in a linen closet, with it's cooling system blocked by 3 years of dust & lint.

We tested every major brand on the market, and IBM eServers were the only ones that didn't start acting "strange" after a while. In our usage, "strange" was a significantly worse failure mode than "broke outright".

There is a solution to USAF's lack of ability to retain technical knowledge, and that's to use the Warrant Officer ranks that got dropped back in the 1950's. These not-quite-officers were supposed to be technical experts in their field, and were not in the chain of command.

The other thing, which I pointed out back in the CyberWarfare thread, was that Airmen get promoted by passing skill tests. The tests get prepared far in advance, which means what you're being tested on is ancient history, so far as technical knowledge is concerned. Should be easy to pass, right? Except it's probably stuff you haven't worked with for a year or more, so you aren't going to do so well.
