Submission + - Zap2it to Stop Providing Listing Data to MythTV

JR writes: Zap2it Labs, which provides free television guide listing data for non-commercial use in programs such as MythTV, has just announced they will discontinue this service starting September 1, 2007. Speculation among the MythTV user community as to what alternatives there might be to Zap2it Labs has already begin

AMD Considering Getting Out of Fabrication Business 229

mytrip writes "2007 has not been kind to AMD, but it's surprising to hear rumours that they might be considering outsourcing chip fabrication. Analysts are predicting that AMD will try to cut costs by moving some fabrication elements out of the company by early next year. 'One Citigroup analyst is predicting a "transformational move" that would result in AMD's lower-end CPUs being manufactured by a third party and possibly selling off part or all of its Dresden, Germany facility. Another report from Goldman Sachs outlines the investment firm's belief that the company will leave manufacturing completely in the hands of third parties.'"

Submission + - Autonomous Vehicles Coming to Car Lot Near You! (sfgate.com)

saldate writes: I was surprised that this was overlooked by Slashdot posters, I found it to be pretty cool and somewhat inspiring. The DARPA Urban Challenge (think of it as DARPA Grand Challenge v2.0) is pushing autonomous automotive travel to the next stage of development, the urban zone. Obviously, the initial target of the project is aimed at military application, but simultaneously paves the way for commercial use. Have a look at the video and any of the articles below:

Submission + - Norway says no to Microsoft tax (konkurransetilsynet.no)

acciaccatura writes: "The Norwegian Competion Authority continues to treat Microsoft as just a company, and not a branch of the government. It was discovered that the government was paying licensing fees on all their computers in order to receive a volume discount. However, it turned out that "all" included those that were running Mac and Linux as well!
The details are posted in english on the Competition Authority's website: http://www.konkurransetilsynet.no/portal/page?_pag eid=235,471114&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL&p_d_i=-1 21&p_d_c=&p_d_v=426779&p_d_i=-7127&p_d_c=&p_d_v=42 6779&p_d_i=-12732&p_d_c=&p_d_v=426779&p_d_i=-12733 &p_d_c=&p_d_v=426779
Scandinavian competitor, LinPro, complained and MS was found in violation of the Competitions Act. A new agreement is now being drafted in order to avoid the "extra" payments. I wonder how many other countries have similar agreements."

Google Spends Money to Jump-Start Hybrid Car Development 352

slugo writes "Internet search giant Google (GOOG) hopes to speed the development of plug-in hybrid cars by giving away millions of dollars to people and companies that have what appear to be practical ways to get plug-in hybrid automobiles to market faster. 'While many people don't associate Google with energy, analysts say the fit isn't all that unnatural. Renewable energy, unlike coal or nuclear, will likely come from thousands or tens of thousands of different locations. Analysts have long said that one of the big challenges will be managing that flow into and out of the nation's electric grid, and that companies that manage the flow of information are well placed to handle that task.'"

Submission + - Tetzschner sacked all boardmembers at Opera

An anonymous reader writes: According to the norwegian newspaper Dagens Næringsliv Jon Tetzchner has sacked all boardmembers of Opera Software to avoid being sacked himself. Stockholders have reportedly been unhappy about the company's deficit and the fact that Opera's stock have gone down more than 60% since March 2006 (although they climbed up a bit in the last week). The board reportedly wanted to sack Tetzchner and hire a new CEO because of this, so Tetzchner sacked the boardmembers with the aid of a few other stockholders (Tetzchner owns 15% of the Opera stock).

Why is the ESRB now adjusting a games rating based on post-release modifications? Have you seen what topless Oblivion is like? You have to be pretty desperate to get off on those lumpy misshapen breasts.

And, since they have started this crusade, why hasn't the Sims 2 been pulled and modded Adults Only yet? That has far more explicit mods and in-your-face sexuality. Hell, the only way to get ahead in that game is to have sex, and that only gets a Teen rating still?

If the ESRB is going to keep pulling this, all game makers should just slap Adults Only labels on their games and let the parents figure out which ones are safe for their kids, like they are supposed to be doing in the first place.
